The actual senor is a chip with metal strips on it and then a 2 pin "output" that feeds a seperate board which is the " sensor controller" portion of the set up. The wire length can/could be any size in length for depth purposes to keep the actually controller part of the sensor out of the dirt/ground. Then the "sensor controller" has a 4 pin out that is fed to the arduino. So as far as corrosion i think it would be very small if any. Also I could make a few cuts in the side of the post at different depths and hook up multiple sensors if I was try to get really anal about it. I was gonna use it for my veggie garden because watering it everyday is a pain in the ass!
Well here are some pics of my AC controller in its box. I have it mounted in my room but havent hooked it up all the way yet. Ive been using it to log data during the day of the temperature in the room. Nothing fancy just visual mental logging. LOL.
