Hey y'all, I'm new to the hobby and intensely interested in it. I just ordered Cervantes' "Marijuana Horticulture" and I've been doing plenty of research on the internet as well. At this point I'm pretty convinced that growing good bud is relatively easy if you know what you're doing, however, it seems like every set up I've seen has been pretty damn expensive (expensive to me = $300+). I only want to grow like two plants at a time on a relatively small scale (about 3-4 oz. hopeful yield per grow). What is a reliable, cheap, and effective set up for a simple micro grow? I've been lurking the forums for a while and while I've seen plenty of setups, I've never really seen anything like a cost breakdown or a how-to. Don't go too hard on me, I'm a noobie, and thanks for all the help! AFN rules!

Hey Pinecone,

Depends on a couple of things. Do you need to grow stealth like, or can you use like a closet or something. However, the first time I grew inside, I bought a HPS light for 125 bucks, a 12 inch oscillating fan for 20, some mylalrs material I got outta the 1$ store, (they were five window sun shields, lol). Some good soil for 30 bucks, nutrients for about 50. PH up and down 10, Cal mag 20. So 260, and I added pieces up from there. Also, there will be an increase in your electric bill, that amount depends on how earth friendly your house is.

I think I could do it cheaper today. I prefer outdoors now. I could get fabric grow pots, for 10 dollars each (15 gallon) good soil at 20 a bag (3), some ph up and down (10), and Cal Mag (20), and do it outside, I will get a better yeild too. But that's me, and you probably don't have that option. Also, you can get a decent LED, which is cheaper on elec. and can grow what you need for about the same price as I spend on my HPS back then. LED technology wasn't like it is today.

Hope this helps. If you need more help, let us know.

Maybe some other chaps and chapesses, will pop in and give their opinions too.

Man, do I have good news for you!!!

My last grow was sour crack by Mephisto genetics. These plants run 12 to 18 inches tall and maybe 10 inches in diameter. They will yield 1 to 2 ounces of ridiculously good bud in both taste and effect in just about 60 days from seed.

They are very easy to grow. You won't even need a tent if you have a room that you can use. Just hang a light over them and give them the water and nutes they need. A soil grow is easiest. If you want the cheapest and easiest grow in a small space, with beautiful plants that are great smoke, this is it.

Empty a closet, hang some cheap cfls, get *good* potting soil. You can find that at a grow store.

I'd start with one seed. If you make a mistake, and I make them all the time, you aren't out as much money, and you've got more seed to try again.

My first light was a Flourowing 125 watt cfl. It worked well for a microgrow. It's also under 60 bucks at Amazon.

A cheap fan (you only want a gentle breeze) is a big help.

Most potting soils are fine for veg, but aren't enough for flowering. If you add nutes to the soil, it will likely burn seedlings. The way I got around that was the General Organics Go Box. About 40 bucks from Amazon.

Because you will likely be using potting soil with nutes, you will have to go easy on the primary nutes. That will be the 2 big bottles in the box. But the other ones, the cal/mag, humic acid, I found them to be a real help. There is also a feeding schedule on the side of the box. Add a tiny bit to start and slowly build up.

My biggest weakness is using too much water and nutes. Learn what burning and lockout look like, and watch for it. Pot likes wet/dry cycles. Depending on the specifics of your grow, that might be 3 or 4 days (or more) between watering.

Good luck, it's very enjoyable once you get the hang of it.

Man, this community is the bomb. Thank you all so much for your help, I really do appreciate it. When I get my set up good to go I will send pictures and try to do a full grow album for y'all:)

Going cheap usually bites newbies in the butt. On the flip side If you succeed on a budget setup it will build confidence.

Small tent - 100 bucks
Mars 300 led - 70 bucks
Nutes - 30-50
Soil and pots - 40
Fan - 20
Exhaust fan - 100-150

Obviously you can save by using a closet instead of a tent but temps could be hard to control. If temps won't be an issue then might not even need an exhaust fan and just need to circulate air. Fresh air is important though.

Good luck.

I would pick up some T8's and get started...T8's are like $12 for a 2 lamp fixture and another couple bucks for the lights...I would pick up 4 or 5 of these and rig them up in a way to create a "tunnel" of sorts...wrap around style...put it over two 5 gallon buckets and stick a medium sized fan on one end of it blowing through the "tunnel of buds"

Most the stuff you should have laying around or be able to get cheap.
But I would think you should be able to get something with good production for under $100

amazing things have been done in rubbermaids , just be sure to bring your ducktape , card board and imagination
