​A twelve-foot marijuana plant decorated as a Christmas tree was confiscated from the home of "an old hippie," who is now facing a drug possession charge, NSW police said Wednesday.

In a press release entitled "Bohemian desecrates holy Christmas ritual," police in the western suburbs of Sydney said they found the giant cannabis plant in the living room of the suspect, reports AFP.

"A hippie celebrates pagan rites as well as Christmas," read the release. "The four-meter-tall marijuana plant had been put in a smart pot and decorated with cheap lights."

"When asked, the man told the perplexed officers that he had intended to add more decorations to the 'tree' and place the presents under it, according to Aboriginal tradition."

Narcotics detectives stumbled on the Christmas tree while searching the home of an "old 79er," a reference to the groups of profligate young students and workers who participated in group orgies which swept across Cabramatta in 1979.

The proud as punch cops seized the plant plus 150 grams (5.3 ounces) of potato chips found in the apartment.

The man "more or less willingly" handed over the 150 grams of potato chips to the officers, according to the police report.
