Hello all, just come back from seeing an old hippy type mate who has been growing for years in his greenhouse. The subject of pests came up and he said that he has never had a infestation EVER! He told me he just places conkers in his greenhouse as most insects can't stand the smell of them!

Anyone else heard if this or is it just an old wife's tale of some sort. I thought they were only any good for playing with in the playground??

The only Conker that I am familiar with is the gun / samurai sword wielding squirrel on the Nintendo 64:shrug:

I am looking into all sorts of deterrants for a potential outdoor crop next season, so this is a definite area of interest for me.

Had to look it up. From Wikipedia.
Conkers is a traditional children's game in Britain and Ireland played using the seeds of Horse Chestnut trees—the name 'conker' is also applied to the seed and to the tree itself. The game is played by two players, each with a conker threaded onto a piece of string: they take turns striking each other's conker until one breaks.

Interesting, I hate spiders so that is always good. It deters spidermites as well?

Could lack of spiders lead to a surge of other insect populations? It might be wise to incorporate ladybugs / praying mantis in the garden if you do this?

Just thinking out loud...
