Mephisto Genetics Consistency of genetics question?

2 sour crack phenos during my current grow was cool to see.

Planting my veggie/flower gardens late Sunday got me to thinking. We need one of you smart folks to come up with a PERENNIAL autoflower girl. :-). Hack them down after flowering but they come back up from roots. Yep wishful thinking!!! :-)

My buddy and I had this conversation and he thinks when growing from seed the odds of getting a top notch pheno is fairly low, like maybe 1-3 out of 10. I don't have any experience growing so I was hoping you guys could drop some knowledge on me.
Basically I'm wondering if you grew 10 Mephisto seeds of the same strain, how many would you typically be super happy with and how many would you be disappointed in?
This question is answered on a strain by strain basis whether photo or Autoflowering. The breeder has to keep breeding to eventually get an IBL, then there will be little variation in seeds. An F1 will have more phenos. Really what is most important is what you want out of your strains and grow.. I have had some mom's for over a decade. But unless you have space and plant numbers. You will spend a lot more time growing photos looking for the pheno you want. If this is your first grow, I would try Autos. You will need a learning curve and you can finish an Auto before a Photo. Try Sour Crack and get a quick harvest. If you want less phenos, look for the strains that are breed further. Remember, with photos you have males to weed out and also phenos to sort out. Good luck with your choice, and be careful starting grows with friends.

I like to grow both an I have access to a ton of clone only strains .I never buy em though dad bought several clones years ago that invested our medical grows an took me for ever to kill broad mites an russets an those same clones wiped out commercial ops for ever .I just don't see the need for that again an would rather pick seeds an grow em .Here's something I know to be true if your a good enough grower an growing is what your about just about every plant you grow will turn out good maybe not like a legendary clone only but good nevertheless.

From my experience with Mephisto gear... if you grow 10, you will get 10 that smoke alike, taste alike, and smell alike. They might not all look alike, but most will yield identically. Mephisto = excellent genetics... great germ rates....and unparalleled high. With Mephisto you get what you buy. Mix some seeds, then grow them out. Smoke and look back in Mephisto’s descriptions and you will easily be able to identify what you are smoking.

I've already purchased some AVT and received a couple Creme de la Chem as freebies. I want to grow both of those and pick up some GWK as well, allowed up to 12 plants in Michigan.

Ok, well get them going before your buddy does the photos. Better yet, grab some Sour Crack and do 2 rounds before you find your females and harvest your first photo crop. Good luck, we are here if you need help!

Not if you buy feminized seeds. Before I switched over to autos I grew quite a few photo strains and never once had a feminized seed produce a male. Sure there’s a slight chance it could happen, but no more than the chance with fem autos. That being said, I’m way happier growing Mephisto gear than I was with any of the photos I grew. The quality is just as good, if not better, and autos are just more convenient for a small scale home grower. At least in my limited experience

The answer to the original question depends on which strains you're running and what filial generation they are on.. F1s basically have four main phenos. if the breeder is breeding for certain traits, then the higher the F generation, the lower number of phenos you should find.

Most people who grow autos just grow them to grow them and don't care much about phenos. Pheno hunting autos is kind of pointless unless you're breeding. If you pop 10 seeds and find 10 you like or love, there's nothing you can do about it..once those plants are gone, they are gone.. No way of getting them back or re growing them. And the odds of finding similar phenos again, aren't in your favor. Sounds like your partner is looking to grow a specific, consistent product by using photoperiod clones. Which is smart for a start up. Go with what you know. Growing autos is definitely awesome, but there's no real pheno hunting with autos, unless your breeding.

Pheno hunting takes time and a lot of seeds. Having a plant limit of 12 and having to take clones and keep mom's doesn't leave many plants to act get but from. Brand new growers don't even know what to look for in a plant and are lucky to not kill seedlings. A good pheno could be easily killed or mistreated. We need to know more about his growing conditions, environment, ect. If he has the ability to have 2 tents I would do 1 tent with 4 Autos and 1 Tent with 4 Photos. This will allow for clones to be taken of the females and be within plant numbers. Do they want a specific photo strain? I have had some mom's for over 15 yesrs. But I have a lot of plant numbers and phenos that people want. But if I of had 12 plants, I would only do Autos. Faster and wide variety. Yes, some phenos are better. You might not see it again. But honestly, I like variety. Even super Fire buds get old if you use too much.
