LOL! yeah the signal is that a larger population of another is present and it freaks them out. another biological method is a WAr drench too,with microbes with a treatment such as Gnatrol,-209 and so on. but the dunk pellets are somewhat effective and will keep them tamped usually. unless ita a large amount.

Ive decided that since I apparently have some time I'd add moisture to the soil, place a good layer of sticky traps right on the soil then keep the containers sealed in garbage bags. I open them every day to let the soil breath however. My logic is that with the time I have I can incubate the eggs, trap and kill them as they hatch into flies and once its all said and done i will be treating it with Mosquito Dunks once the order arrives. I think ive come to terms with the idea that they will likely be a mainstay and will have to just keep them in check.

just get some fine bird sand mix, cover the soil with it and wait. the sand does make it almost impossible for the gnats to reincarnate since they are cut off from the top. i tried a few weeks ago, worked pretty good! there where a lot of those bastards and they became less. only spotted a single one today and thats okay since we talking nature right here. good luck

How is the airflow around the soil? Try making it too windy for them to fly in and you should see numbers drop away as they won't be able to go where they want and will go where you make the air go. That and a spray gun full of water to blast them into the ground ...and without plants to damage slap 'em with a fly swatter for good measure.

I would say use the combination of diatomaceous earth and sand or river rock, I just use de for the most part. Those "dunks" contain insecticidal toxin. To each their own, but a "toxin" of any kind may affect flower, if nothing else, in taste.

All references i find to the product claims it contains BTI (bacterium) but nothing else is mentioned. Is there something I might be missing.? Im def not a fan of chems.

yeah this is the problem ultimately man. several different ways to do it and they all work. organics,chems,hybrid of the two or three styles. but if your organic ,I would stick with those things. Gnatrol is alright,azomax tends to work ok. but really all you need is something that pisses them off bad and seal them up. they die or drastically reduced. frass is good,gnatrol is good,SNS-209 with a frass drench is good too. DE is alright it just looses its better properties once its wet or evenly moist. so a sterlie play box sand is what your looking for. about an inch on the top of the soil.

Dunks are ok just not as effective imho. used them a few times. but all these things work ,but some more than others.
