I'll take AB's word for it. He's much more an expert than I am. But burping seems like a decent practice, one way or the other. Especially if your jars have an airtight seal. You want to minimize oxygen exposure, but at the same time, you don't want conditions in the jar to become completely anaerobic. That's a good way for certain bacteria to attack the buds. Some particularly nasty bacteria species enjoy anaerobic environments, including Clostridium botulinum.
Cigar humidors are not 100% airtight, for example. (Though they're pretty tight, and it's recommended to burp them at least once a month. You'll be doing plenty of "burping," though, if you're constantly reaching in for a smoke!).
