Lighting Decisions.. why pay more for LED?

Ya,there will always be some tweeking, how many dark reds, reds, oranges, blues,ir and uv.Will anyone ever come up with the perfect mix,I don't know, only time will tell.

Just wait until all the uncertainties get sorted out in the US and big MedCo's and such starts throwing serious wonga at this..........from the legal, financing and regulatory/taxation issues are sorted out and chiseled in granite........a matter of months would be my bet........the weedy world will never be the same again!

With Mars and other earlier-generation, such as 3-watt LEDs, now costing so little, such as a Mars 3x100-watt now often selling for less than $100, if you have the money to even consider GN or other premium non-discounted-type brands, why not just buy and use both together? The additional cost of a Mars or other older technology LED is almost irrelevant in the context of what you're apparently willing to spend, having an additional LED will likely rapidly pay for itself in terms of yields and quality, and you'll have backup (could be invaluable) in case one goes offline.

If spectrum coverage is your primary concern, why not overlap use of more than 2 different cheap older models? For the cost of a GN, you could probably get a combined well over 1000 watts (such as four at 200-400-watts each) and better cover all bases of presumed desirable light spectrum. It seems logical that such a spectrum mixture and much higher total power would provide better results than a GN alone or, perhaps, even a GN supplemented with say a single 300-watt.

Locals in the UK (and, perhaps, Europe) obviously favor GN as a premium brand. But you might also consider other highly marked-up apparently well-respected US-associated brands, such as Black Dog and Solar Storm.

Well said.

So lets see, Black Dog https://www.blackdogled.com/ ......natural sunlight.......one grower got 2 pounds from 1 plant......560 W = 1 LB.+.....(did I just hear a faint s****** in the background)........peer reviewed it says, but no mention of who these "peers" are..........pure focus on cannabis growers.......lots of colorful charts and a journey into eternity of repetition..........hogwash, didn't even bother to check the prices.......ahhh, almost forgot, the classis NIR(Near Infra Red), appealing to spacers with a fondness for Star Trek..........make up your own mind!

Maybe I'll look up Solar storm tomorrow.....or not!

Not saying these are bad lights per se, just the usual marketing pitch throwing me off their train of thought in a gentle curve!!

Well, z6.gif

Just in case I misrepresented the Black Dog, there is also T-shirts and sun glasses for sale there........

Wow, thanks for the replies, a lively debate :) Think Ill get a 96x3 Mars reflector then, should be good for my small space.. i think? Now, just need to decide whether to scrog or not.

Someone mentioned heat compared to hps, my concern was actually the other way round.. ie will i have to add supplementary heat? it's an unknown to me right now as i'm not used to LED at all > I don't know what to expect environment wise inside my proposed cabinet.

Tang, that Bukem track takes me back.. i have it somewhere on some scratched up old vinyl, nice.

I may be a newbie on this site, but wisdom comes with age. Several issues are in play when you are looking to purchase anything. First and foremost is need. Do you really need this item, in this case we are discussing lighting and more specifically LED lighting. At the heart of this issue is need, plants need light to grow, so we have established need. Second factor is price. You must temper your "wants" with your "means". Can you afford a GN HS1, or only a Marshydro UFO. You should always determine what is the highest level of features you are willing to pay for. This is the time to educate yourself. Read, read, read. With the internet, you have access to more information than you will ever be able to assimilate. Once you have done your research and determined which features you need in this light to meet your plants needs, now look at the different lights that meet the criteria you have established. It is always prudent and advisable to seek advice when making these determinations, but in the end, the decision is yours alone.

That being said. I followed the course just a few short weeks ago. I decided several things.

1. LED is the wave of the future in grow lights and lighting in general. LED's are more efficient than all other currently available lighting formats.

2. LED technology is advancing and the industry will be in flux for years, but choose wisely and you can ride the advances and benefit along the way.

3. At this point in time, the MarsHydro 96x3 reflector series is a good light for me to get into the LED wave. This light allows me to gain experience with LED's at a price that I found acceptable. As I have already begun to see the results and differences in growth, I am already altering my perceptions of what to expect and what I would like to change for future LED purchases.

4. The GN HS1 appears to be one of those "quantum leap" units. Every industry has them. It is that next step in function, form and efficiency. I will watch Brother TaNg's grows, which are always informative and amazing, to get my first hand experience of what this light can do.

So, to any who are undecided, it's a light, you have to have one to grow plants. If an LED fits your purposes and you can afford it buy one.

Disclaimer: Neither TaNg nor any LED manufacturer paid for my endorsement. The opinions expressed are mine and clearly the ravings of a mad man.

my cab is about the same size as your's and my mh 96x3 work's perfect. as far as heat I had to add a tube style heater but my cab is out in an unheated garage.

Thanks. Mine will be indoors at room temperature so maybe i wont need extra heat, i dunno. How many plants do you have in your space ? Would you advise a scrog?
