Outdoor Desert Growing

Does anyone grow outdoors in the deserts of South West America? Is it even possible? My concern is heat...and irrigation...has any of you figured these things out?

I to am in the desert south west, and june july and august are the hotest, they'll need shade and extra water...other then that the other 9 months are kick ass..
