I've had a fair bit of bad luck germing some seeds lately... so I've been searching the web for some info to get my facts straight...

I found this website, by Mandala Seeds and boy do they say almost the opposite of everything I usually see around

http://www.mandalaseeds.com/Guides/Germination-Guide

What do you make of this?

Don't know what t make of this..
I do the papertowel method with 100% succes and had no problems with this method..
Peace

I think what they are saying is that their seeds don't require soaking as their hulls aren't as tough. I would probably soak them anyway, but that's just me. I soak till they crack, then into the soil. Low temperatures are the cause of more seeds not germinating than just about anything else. 75 - 80 degrees is a good range. In the winter I use a heat mat under my starter pots. I pre water them the day before I plant and set them on the mat for day so the soil is already warm when I plant them.

I soak mine as well since cause some of the earliest reading I did on the subject said what its supposed to do short of softening the Husk,it helps to jumpstart the hormones in a much more natural and yet faster method of poppin em.

As I am lazy I either slit a root riot cube open on side and place a seed in it, which allows me to take the seed to whatever medium I am going to use without the cube. Or I plant directly in soil. After messing with crap for so long I tired of recreating the egg.

Also, make sure you plant them 1/2" deep. A lot of people only go 1/4" but at 1/2" you'll have less problems with the husk sticking. At that depth they stay in the moist soil a bit longer, keeping the husk moist and giving the leaves more time to push it open. If they come up too soon the husk dries out and won't completely open.

Ah... thats exactly what happened with 2 when going straight into coco... Noted, thanks!

Been doing a 24h soak, with distilled or bottled water, pH around 5.7, then paper towel.
I got even worse results with rockwool. Pre-soaked with pH 5.7, did not squeeze them, temps constant 25ºc, with and without dome...
With photo's I had crazy results using 2ml/L of Rhizotonic... roots would burst out growing. I was using Root Riot plugs but ran out. Hmmm... come to think of it out of all my mistrials 90% were with rockwool. First time using them, but I did read up and followed procedures to the letter. I can't think of anything else!

Bumping this 'cos its still bugging me, that mandala website... I mean, surely other major breeders would have similar disclaimers up on their websites, but never seen one of the sorts...

Anyone?

I don't soak the beans I sow dry into the prepped as per label direction RW cubes and water. Muddys right about the depth with a 1/2" or so no more helmets for me

toke

I like placing between two damp coffee filters on a dish and then wrap them in cling film and place in a warm place (on top of the grow tent works well :) )
virtual 100% germination rate if using good quality seeds
then as muddy says plant around half an inch in the medium just make sure its not to wet they need hardly any moisture to start with just a dribble
