Lighting Do LED lights affect calcium in someway?

As a new grower using led lights DWC,i've heard that led lights somehow affect calcium uptake in some way,is this just unfounded misinformation or is there some truth to it?..i dont recall anything like this coming up in threads about HID causing cal/mag lockout..any thoughts on this anyone?....

Yes - it's commonly considered that LEDs can cause a Calcium def

This was in answer to someone enquiring about silicum flash (a product by biotabs) in one of my threads .. it's a modern (and enlightening) explanation / fix for the issues.

I think the information key to you (in hydro) is Silicates

I can try to clear up here something I already cleared up elsewhere on the Calcium deal, ...the Silicium Flash does have trace amounts of Calcium, but eh main thing it has is the silicates that strengthen the plants ability to fight against the led robbing it of its ability to absorb the Calcium in the first place, which is in the SF, but mostly in the tabs itself and the water you add. More than enough calcium there to do the trick.

If you don't have the SF, the plants lose ability to absorb and then look cAlcium deficient,...that DOES NOT mean you need to add Calcium, it means you need to add silicates of some kind.

.. I consider this to be solid info from a solid grower!

hmm interesting funny how thats not stated on the box(joke)yeah well i am using a 250w led viperspector and am having cal/mag probs using canna aqua but i was running a low ph so i fixed that up hope it works,i think i'll be adding silica from now on with the other micros now more info is coming to light about this cal/mag and led issue,so what i can gather from that thread is that led are not really full spectum there is a lower spectum in nature that fixes these cal issues am i correct,so what should i look for in a led now!?ive got my cal/mag juice maxed out and i will add silica..running the ph @6.2 two weeks into flower fingers crossed.....

Yeah, bare in mind that thread is like 5 years old now ... so LED tech has come on a LONG way. Ideally, you're trying to replciate the sun ... but i'm not a technically minded grower, so i just spent the money on what i knew to be awesome at the time and last me a long time.

I'm also a complete nub with hydro - but would say that 6.2 PH may be at the highest end of the nute uptake range in Hydro?? I'd need someone who grows that way to confirm or deny (i'm organic in soil)

thanks for the link thats going to help me a great deal ty,and yeah like you i try to listen to the wider community on led tech ect....led's are excactly what i need so hope there is a fix to it ,,im trying to learn how to make my ph swing from 5.8 to 6.2 DWC so my plants get all the nutes within its 1 week bucket change(growing is a no no here so i need stealth,vpn's,tor, tasers lol) im on my own waiting for legislation until then i work in the shadows .....thanks again

You'll want to keep ur pH between 5.5-6.3pH and I find the sweet spot to be 5.8pH (it could vary based on cultivar on whether it's the "sweet spot" for that cultivar but it is definitely a safe zone for any cultivar on my experience). As for "making" your pH swing, I don't feel that something u need to or want to try to do. Ur rez (whether it's a reservoir or a DWC bucket) will tend to swing by itself. As a rule of thumb (and there r always exceptions to rules ), as ur plants uptake nutes (particularly N), ur pH will drift up. If u find u pH drifting down, it tends to indicate that ur nute intensity (EC/TDS) is high. Even if ur using pH stabilized nutes, u will still experience pH drift over time in ur rez. If ur biggest prob is that ur pH is stable at 5.8 (or there abouts), then trust me that's not a prob. Some hydro growers would kill to have that issue lol If it wanders up or down plus or minus .2, no stress, let it. Much more than that, and u'll want to reign it in. Finally, u'll find in time that ur pH will pretty much always wander in the same direction, for some up, for others down. Once u know that, it becomes even easier to manage and maintain
