What kind of hydro system are you using? I grow in 5 gallon bubble buckets and AutoPots and use mostly the same technique in both. I use RapidRooters which are a lot like the root riot plugs.

First, I skewer the RR down the middle so that the root will follow the path of least resistance and go straight down. I put the RapidRooter into a tray and these into a lightproof plastic container with a lid. I moisten the RR with simple tap water and put it on top of a warming mat to get nice and humid. At this point I will put seeds into a 24 hour soak and then afterwards place the seed into the RR tray that is warm and ready to go. Generally within 3 days of being in that environment they will pop their little heads up and be ready and starving for light. I have about a 95% success rate with this.

Second, with the bubble buckets I simply place them in the bucket with the water just up to the bottom of the 6" net cup. The air stone at the bottom of the bucket pushes water up the hydroton and the roots seek down for the source. It generally takes about a week, to a week and a half, for the root to touch down into the res from the bottom of the net cup. The AutoPots I simply put the seedling in and water at day 1,5,10,15,20 and turn on reservoir so never again lol.

Finally, the very early part of the grow is a tiny bit slow while they're establishing themselves but give them a warm and humid environment and they should be fine.

Hopefully this has helped you somewhat and if you have more specific questions I would be glad to help.
