Hang it at 24"-30" and even then, you barely get coverage of a 3'x3'. 600w HPS in a cheap reflector puts out more par beyond a 2'x2' @ equal heights. Big center par looks good for marketing, but par is not linear to photosynthesis rate. (Beyond 8-900 is a huge waste)

There ya go. Great info @Atulip thanks for helping out. But I will tell you this. All par readings, light watts, bi focal lense, reflectors, or anything else that you want to put on paper, and I can't eplain how or why but a 1200 watt mars 2 LED will out perform a 600 mh/hps in a 3x3. (Or at least in my setup.


My buds are bigger and more dense since the switch. That's fact that no one can screw with for marketing

I've had opposite results, good center buds but the spread is so poor the outskirt buds were lower quality than my normal trim. But I bought when they advertised the mars 2 400 as a 400w hps equiv(shady marketing(also why they provide a 18" par chart but recommend hanging at 24-30")). So I was trying to light my 2.5x2.5 with 180w of epistar leds.(I now light it with 240w of Cree)

If you were using the lowest end 600w HPS bulb, and reflector, I could see the mars 1200 out performing it. Otherwise I'd chalk it up to more experience, different strains, and hype for a free light.

Don't get me wrong though, Mars Hydro isn't bad for what it is, a watt for watt hps equiv with more blue and less heat(infrared). I Even had 6 of the 300w(135w, $65) eBay models at one point(seedling, veg, and supplemental mostly).

And it really helps not to get lazy.... I rotate these girls 180 degrees 2 times daily keeps the growth even and under the center par for 10 hrs daily

Oh yeah. I'm major lazy though, so spread is extra important for me I suppose. My ladies are lucky to get rotated twice a week lol.

I am building a space and can work with 3.5' D X 5' W and 7' Tall. I already have a 2X4X5 that I will use for Veg.

I would look into two lights for that since it's so long.

To be honest I wouldn't use a 1200 or 1600 in that space. From what I have seen the coverage 5W would never be covered by either. I would look more toward 2 lights of say 700 maybe ..... just my 2 cents

I think I'm gonna give two 600 watters a go for a 5x5x6.5 I always have my mh and hps to support if need be. I use 600w hps or mh most of the time.

Not to lead you astray from your decision, but Platinum LED has long skinny panels that would work well in a long setup like that.
