I put together a new tent to use as a drying room and MAN, is that fan louder than I expected! Wondering if I did something wrong with the setup?

I own a 8” Hyper Fan Stealth that’s super quiet so I thought I’d save a few bucks this time and I got a regular 6” Hyper Fan. I directly attached it to a 18” carbon filter and ran some uninsulated 6” duct out of the tent. The noise is actually coming out of the filter - as if the fan noise is reverberating inside of the filter chamber. It’s weird. The fit between the fan and the filter is pretty tight and I duct taped it really well so it’s not a rattling issue. It’s a steady hum and not the normal ‘whooshing’ noise of air being pulled through the filter. Should I relocate the fan so that there’s a section of duct between the filter and the fan itself?

That big stealth unit on 100% isn’t near as loud as this system at 50%! If I can’t quiet this down I’m gonna pony up the extra $75 and swap this for another Stealth unit.

Small piece of flexi duct and possibly a noise damper should cure the problem, you attach a fan directly to the filter then the slightest vibration from the fan will be transmitted straight into the filter, so try the cheap method of a small piece of flexi to absorb any vibration caused by eddy currents in the airflow.

And I know this is stating the obvious, but make sure the fan is mounted the right way round so it doesn't blow into the filter

10-4. Thanks! I’ll try adding that section. I think I may mount the fan to the wall outside the tent using screws since it won’t be directly connected to the filter. You think that’d work or does it need to be close to the filter?

Yeah, it’s definitely blowing the right way. Lol! But ‘yeah, that’s the kinda thing I’d do. Lol!’ Found out I don’t need to worry about a drug test at work for a bit so I’m getting to smoke a little right now; and that’s making me a little “ditsy” right now. LMAO!

Distance away shouldn't be too much of an issue with a rigid duct, if the flexi is too long then that can create noise on it's own thanks to eddys inside the flexi as the flexi is not smooth on the inside, but if you're mounting the fan to something solid then make sure you use some sort of anti-vibration mount or the slightest vibration will be transmitted into the, in this case, wall and that in itself will create noise.
