New Grower filtering system, grow tent

first i want to thank everyone for helping me
with my grows,
i have a problem and it was a problem last grow too
and i thought i solved it but i did not solve it,
i have a carbon filter and a 4 inch centrifugal fan, on the ceiling of my tent which is 4 by 2 by 5, it is exhausted into my bedroom, last grow the plant smell was coming
out of my exhaust into my bedroom, i emailed the person who i bought the fan from and he said that the fan is on a too high of a speed, he recommended me to buy a variable speed switch for the centrifugal fan, and i should lower the speed of the fan with the switch, he said that the fan was too fast that it was pulling the stink air too fast thru the filter not cleaning it, he said it needs to be slowed down, well i bought the switch , now i can put it on slow speed now but when i do , i still get the smell coming out of my exhaust hose, the temp in the tent is always between 78 and 80 degrees fah, humidity between 50 and 60 percent,400 watt hps cooltube light assy, with a fan, have a small fan in the tent for circulation, please i would love any help

If the humidity is too high then that can stop the filter working correctly, however, your readings seem fine. Sounds to me like you either have a shit carbon filter or it has come to the end of it's life. How many grows has it seen? Did you buy it brand new?

Not sure why he recommended a controller to sort it out. That doesn't seem right to me.

Both the fans and filters have CFM ratings and they should be about the same. Doesn't have to be an exact match, but close. If they are both 4", it should be fine. I agree, sounds like the filter was either a cheapie or it is spent. I've been using the same one for over 3 years now and I'm just starting to smell a bit of odor coming through it, so time for a new one myself. A variable speed controller is nice to have but I don't see that as a fix to your situation. I use one to control my fan speed to help maintain the correct temps in my grow space. Faster in the summer when inside temps are higher and lower in the winter when temps are lower.

I bought a cheap carbon filter, get a smell occasionally. It's not a big deal to me because it's legal here and the nearest neighbors house is about 500 yards away. I'd get a high quality carbon filter if stealth/rippers are that big of a deal. Mine is a cheap amazon unit for 40 bucks in the same size tent. It does work well enough for my needs but if I spent $100USD or more I could have gotten one that would NEVER release odors (until it was spent of course).
