Hi Guys,

Can't believe hpw lucky I am to have found this site. Already had some great advice.

Expecting my supplies to come in over the next week.

Secret Jardin DS60 grow tent
Mars 300w LED (loan from a friend for first grow)
100/200 RAM carbon filter
Black Orchid 4'' Axial-flo extractor fan
3L Airpot (I went smaller for my 1st grow. Hoping to do 2 x 3l in next round)?

Seeds: (on there way!). Not sure what I will be growing yet, either the Trinagle Kush or the Northern Light.

Auto Triangle Kush Feminised Seeds (Mephisto Genetics)

Auto Northern Light Feminised Seeds (Royal Queen Seeds)

Auto Dark Devil Feminised Seeds (Sweet Seeds)

Some Questions:

I am still unsure what medium & nutes I should use? I am growing only 1 plant first and I'll be on site everyday so access won't be an issue but I also don't have space for lots of separate soils.

  • Seems to be a lot of love for BioBizz lite?
  • Coco seems intersting but too hard for a first grow?
  • Is it better to mix your own soil?
  • Any special requirements for growing in an Airpot?
  • Is there a fairly reliable way to test your tent, temps and carbon filter before you start your grow? I don't want to run into issues after I start!
  • Will tap water bo OK to use throughout? Live ina nice soft water supply area in South Wales?

Thanks Guys.

Good luck. Enjoy the experience, ask questions, read grow diary's and you'll be golden.

Hey bro, Welcome to The Forum.

Coco in my opinion is easier than most other mediums. The main thing that gives new Growers difficulty with Coco is they don't want to buy the proper meters and water to full run off. It's critical in Coco when you're starting out to have meters to measure your EC and your pH at regular intervals and to get enough run off. So if you're using an expensive nutrient line and you grow big plants you could end up spending a lot more with Coco.

One plant under a mars 300 is a good idea. You can get down within about 12 to 14 in in flour and it'll give you penetration down about 18 in if you do that. Problem is once you're down around 12 in the for print is only about 2X2 so you're going to want just one plant if you really want to get a good yield out of it.

If you do start off in Coco and go with just one plant I might avoid that Northern Lights, they have the potential in your setup to get way bigger than the space you've got. Although with a training plan you can grow them just fine.

Thanks Guys.
Welcome, I started in soil with 20% Coco and vermiculite. I find it more forgiving as a noob. Airports need watering more frequently because they dry out faster. I go by weight if it's quite light it gets a water. Tap water is ok but age it for 24 hours in open container to get rid of chlorine. Look up your tap water supplier to find your pH and other interesting stuff on the internet. Adjust pH accordingly after you add nutes. I use old timer organic because it's forgiving and I can easily figure out and correct defficiency, which rarely happen. Calmag is a must with led lights btw.

Oh on soil I use verve purple bag seed and seedling , works fine. Just saw your soft water chart too so you may have to bring it up depending on nutes and medium.

You can fire up your system before growing and see what she does. You can adjust temps by opening vents, adjusting speed of fan or by putting lights off at warmest part of day. I have a greenhouse tube heater on a thermostat as my space gets cold in the winter.

biobizz nutes and soil are easy available in the uk.a nice fluffy soil with some perlite allready in,a lil more is nice to.
coco i see so many new coco growers 3 weeks in and they have no ph/ec meters...an easy way to mess up a grow or be playing catch up from the get go.it is a great medium, but not for beginers straight away.
organics is getting very popular, but a home made soil needs months to break down proper just like composting does.something to think about in the future.
airpots give them a real good shake about and tapping down.
set the tent up turn everything on,over a few days check min/max temps and humidity.
no furr in your kettle ? soft water makes good tea.will probable need to add some cal/mag to shopping list.
good luck n keep er lit.

Thanks guys - I think I'm going to try the coco/perlite route. I haven't grown before so at least I have no habts to break and I have plenty of time to read up before I start.

Any advice on quality suppliers for the coco-coir in the UK? Sounds cheaper to mix in my own perlite but it seems the quality of the coco bricks varies a lot between suppliers.

Cheers Archie - much appreciated.

I'll certainly be making sure to have ph test kits and calmag before I start anything. And I have had the same £10 Tesco kettle for 3 years - practically no fur. Just like back home in Glasgow!

Can't wait to get started :cools:

some coco is compressed in bricks some aint.some coco needs rinsed out some need pre charging with calmag.coco likes to be moist to wet very unlike soils wet dry cycles.a dry pocket of coco in the pot and ph can be all over the shop.
soil has more of a wingability to it,coco you kinda have to stay ontop of it.
not trying to put you off coco (yes i am) but only cause its your first grow and i want to see you make it to harvest with an ok result.
if your set on coco please do a lil extra reading up,and have a few supplies on hand before you get stuck in.
good luck n keep er lit.
