Outdoor first outdoor grow help?

Hi. I am on my first outdoor grow too. Currently about day ten since they popped out of the soil. The advice I was given was to start them inside. Then give them an hour outside then back in building up to taking them out full time, as this acclimatizes the plant for the move.

One fella said that it’s a good idea to bring them in at night for the first five weeks, or until they start smelling, so they don't get too cold at night. I am at 54L so it might not be an issue for you depending where you are in the world.

Good luck with your grow

Would do as well. I had a lil guy out side got cought in the rain. Ripped one of it's leaves off. Poor widow =/

Hi seedlingstarter and earlygirl. Although this is my first auto grow I have several seasons experience in outdoor photo's.
The way I have found best to start seedlings off is to pop them indoors and when they are getting their first set of true leaves I start to put them outside during the day ( this is usually around the end of march ) I use a cold frame but if you don't have one you can stack two piles of bricks up against a wall and use a sheet of glass on top ( be careful lol ).
When i'm sure the frosts have finished i leave them in the cold frame until they have their 3rd set of leaves and by then it's ok to put them in their final position in the ground usually around end of April then the fun starts as you watch and wait all summer.
If you have them in the ground prepare the ground first dig it over own to about 2 feet add some slow release organic fertilizer and if your soil is heavy some vermiculite and well rotted compost ( B&Q sell it cheap) you don't have to worry too much about them let nature take it's course just check them in dryer weather and feed them every 2 weeks but the main thing is just leave them to do their thing.
If you need to know anything else don't hesitate to give me a shout

Hi seed,

It's best to germinate seed indoors, because the variable temps outdoors can lead to a poor germ ratio ime.
Pre growing for a week or two on a window sill will help them establish a large enough root system so they can handle the big lamp in the sky, which can fry newly germ'd seeds. Depending on your latitude and local climate it should be fine to leave them out on sunny days, but bring them back in at night for a few days. This way the cooler temp's toward the end of the day/evening will acclimatize your plants, i have done it this way for over ten years with no casualties.

Its also best when leaving them out for the first night to place them off the ground by a foot or two, as the temperature difference between ground level and 2 foot above it can be some 5 degrees different.

Plants really are tougher then most of us think, and have many defence mechanisms to defend them against the cold/pests. I have found that when growing late flowering photo strains late in the season its best to rap the pot in an old jumper or bubble rap to keep the soil temp's up so that the micro life stays active. The same thing can be achieved if growing directly in the ground by covering the ground in a layer of straw to insulate the it from the worst of the weather.

thanks everyone. I have already started 2 northern light autos from nirvana the light schedule is on 24 hours. Is this a bad lighting schedule? I Will place them outside one they have about 2 sets of true leaves. I dug two holes around some bushes in the yard that i will plant them in once they are established well enough to go outside. Should i add some slow release ferts? I filled the holes with organic soil, I can top dress it with organic compost if this helps.

Personally i dont like using a 24 hour lighting schedule, because of the fact that all living things on this earth
have a natural day night cycle, us included!
plants release hormones and other bio chemicals during the dark hours that help keep them happy and healthy, and even make them less prone to pests etc. I use 18/6 for photo sensitive strains and 20/4 for auto-flowering, although ive had just as good results using 18/6 with auto's. Putting your plants outside in to a lower light cycle say 16/8 from 24 hour could cause stress, that with "feminized" seed can cause the odd nanna to form.

There really is no right or wrong fella, its a horses for courses thing,
if by the end of it you have nice bud then, who really cares lol

Thanks Raedwald. SO this morning the girls were a little dry and i went to water them. I dropped one girl she and her soil all came out the pot. One of the roots broke off, i repotted her do you think she will be ok? It wasn't the main root it was one that came off the main root

I like to start my outdoor plants indoors for a minimum of 3 weeks ... I want them big enough to handle the weather, bugs and Bunny rabbits ... I have such a grow started and clumsily yanked one out of the pot yesterday ... almost sounded like Velcro letting loose. I just stuck it back in the ground and packed dirt around it's base and it looks to be OK today ... best of luck w/ your grows ...

From what you've said i think it will pull through.

Good luck for the season
