Four of my last six Mephisto seeds have germed using the paper towel method but never sprouted. I put the seed taproot down about 1/4" and cover with soil using Fox Farms Happy Frog. I've gone right into 3 gallon pots or into the small fabric starter cups. I use a spray bottle to mist the soil around the seed to keep it most but not soaking. They're under a ViparSpectra 450 at 24". Temp average 83 to 88 and humidity averages 40% or so.

I had germInari on problems over the winter due to cold temp's but that's been corrected so I'm not sure what I'm doing here.

Germination is frustrating!

I failed on 3 recently after 6 at 100%

How long was the tap root? Did you pre water the pot? Was the temp of the soil ok? Did you over pat down the soil? I prefer 1” down myself. Did you touch the tap root?

Ok, you have more than 1 issue. [HASHTAG]#1[/HASHTAG] Happy Frog is garbage. [HASHTAG]#2[/HASHTAG] You are probably over watering (Either the Paper Towel and or Happy Frog. ). Paper Towel is completely unnecessary and in my opinion can cause failures. So my advice is to first use a High Quality medium. That stuff is full of bugs and there are much better/cleaner options. I am not sure what you feed your plants? I have made more than 1 Thread on how to start seeds. Follow my instructions and you will have plants up in 2 days. Avoid the paper towel Technique if you are failing so often. Soak seeds 24 hrs in straight water. Plant directly and cover it with a clear cup. Grab some Coco if you are using nutes and thank me later. It is not the seeds. Your temps are good for my Technique, but if you want to succeed. Toss the Happy Frog in the garbage. Good luck, if you need help just ask. But don't waste more seeds til you read my thread. Peace slow

BTW, no need to spray the medium once you plant your seed until after it is up and open. Cover it with a clear cup. The medium will not dry out and adding water to it will only cause troubles. When a seed germs it only needs the minor 12-24 hr soaking to start the process. If you hydrated a 3 gal pot of Happy Frog and the continue to spray a seed without a root system, you will either slow things down or potentially fail. Think about it. If you put a 3 gal pot of Soil in a tent and don't plant anything, how long would that pot stay wet? A long time! A seed has no root system yet, but it's mission is to build one ASAP. Roots seek moisture, so if you are spraying wet soil....what incentive does the root have to grow? Good luck, slow

Thanks all. I was using Nectar of the Gods [HASHTAG]#4[/HASHTAG] soil as well and had the same issues. I did not soak the soil before planting either, so I could try that next time as well. When I planted, tap roots are between 1/8" and 1". I did not tap down the soil, just made a tiny ndent and then sprinkled more soil on top. I've had failures with SODK, HubbaBubbaSmelloScope, Ripley's OG, and Chemdogging lately.

That sounds like an issue I had with the bad batch of Sour Crack that Canada had. They did graciously replace them after they conducted a germ test themselves and found issues and concluded it was the shipping or the previous guy who was working for them in Canada. Germ issues are part of life and given the freebies you get it covers the odd issue people might have. Its rare to do a replacement of beans and rightfully so.

I was able to germ but it took about 7 days to tap out and then I put them in pristine coco and they never sprouted. I had a look at them after and they looked f'd up. Pretty sure i have a picture of them. I'll pop the replacements in a few days and will be interested to see how that goes. Hoping for success as I really want some SC to harvest.

Do you have a picture of them? Where did you get them? When did you get them? Did you store them well? And it was 1 bean of the 4 different strains?
Sorry @lunarman , but this is totally a case of human error. Unless he purchased 3rd party. No way u fail at 4 different strains. Paper towel method causes failures and spraying your Medium before the seed is up is completely wrong as well. If it was just 1 Strain, like your Sour Crack it could be possible to fail for other reasons you stated. But no way 4-5 strains fail without human error

Yeah as I think about it with the four strains like that it's definitely kind of weird. That sounds more like a provenance kind of thing than an operator error though

Where those 4 strains all in the same paper towel or 4 different times? I thought you said you were spraying your soil in the initial post. Please tell us more about how you started the pots. Did you water your soil at all before planting? How much? Did you use nutrients? What kind? Moisture level of your Medium is the single most important part of starting a seedling. If you had taproots when you planted that were 1 inch long when planted that is plenty long enough and you may want to poke a shallow hole longer than an inch with a Chop Stick. Then lightly cover. Also, if you have that many failures I would highly suggest trying to start your seeds in 5oz cups and transplant them in about 10-14 days instead of using a 3 gal pot. Much easier to control the moisture level than a large pot of Soil. Good luck

The soil was dry when I put the seeds in..covered with a bit of soil, and then.misted. sounds like I should have mois tend soil first and then put seed in. I just used plain tap water that sat out for 25 hours..pH to 6.5 with no nutes.

Seeds were 2 at a time..so 2 in one paper towel and 2 in another. Ill grab some small cups and moisten the soil first as suggested and then cover with another cup and Wil also soak seed in water for 24 hours instead of paper towel method for a change..appreciate all of the info.
