Mephisto Genetics Germs seeds not sprouting

The soil was dry when I put the seeds in..covered with a bit of soil, and then.misted. sounds like I should have mois tend soil first and then put seed in. I just used plain tap water that sat out for 25 hours..pH to 6.5 with no nutes.

Seeds were 2 at a time..so 2 in one paper towel and 2 in another. Ill grab some small cups and moisten the soil first as suggested and then cover with another cup and Wil also soak seed in water for 24 hours instead of paper towel method for a change..appreciate all of the info.

That‘s a good decision, bro! Moisten and tap the soil 24h before you put the seed in it. Temps are very important (+/- 80f are perfect) ... prepare the cup/pot 1 day before you plant the seed and let it warm up in your grow space. Temps should be quite stable during germination... if your temps are dropping too much try it with lights 24/0 during this process.

Good luck!

Yes, that is your issue. Roots seek moisture. Prepare your Soil a day ahead as @gringuito98 suggested. You want the medium to MOIST, not wet. Definitely not bone dry and then misting the top layer. Infact, if you read my thread band decide to start in small cups sometime...I suggest bottom feeding to promote downward growth of roots. Also, if you start directly in 3gal pots. Use your hands and pic up the pot after you moisten it up a day ahead. Feel the weight of the pot when it is moistened up. When in doubt on when to water, pick up the pot. A 3 gal pot of moist soil will not need to be watered for days at first. So don't over do it with the water. But putting dry soil in and not watering will dry the tap root up, this is why you have failed. Live and learn, you got the next ones. Good luck, slow

Thanks guys..just put a gallon of water through the 3 gallon pot..most but not soaking. I also put a seed in a cup of water so I'll drop it in soil tomorrow night. I'll pick up some small clear cups next time I'm at the store as well.

IMHO it’s easier to use a 5-6oz cup, bottom feeding and transplant than into the final container. Look at @slowandeasy thread .... it works perfectly!

In your case with an 1 gallon water soak I would recommend to prepare your pot even earlier. More water in the soil needs more time to warm up. Next time I would suggest to do that 2 days before planting the seed.

BTW 1 gal of water in a 3 gal pot of soil? I hope I‘m wrong but that is really a lot of water and it sounds more soaked than moist to me ..we will see.

Now you will have to be very careful with your watering! After braking soil, seedlings consume less than 1oz water/day during their first week of life, so no additional water needed at least not in the area of the seedling itself. When pot gets lighter, which will be mainly caused by evaporation not by the seedling‘s thirst, pure the water close to the rim of the container.

A digital balance would help you a lot. You can take the weight of the pot once it‘s precharged and the seed is planted and control it daily. For example: Once it has lost +/- 10oz of weight you reload these 10oz.

Good luck!

Makes sense. How does the bottom feeding work exactly? Do I just let the cup sit in another cup of nutrient water or put it in for a bit and then remove it? I did find one to thread talking about it but I wasn't exactly sure on this part.

Thanks for the link! Once you have the cup moistened and put the seeds in, I see that you cover the cup to create a dome for humidity..makes sense to me. What I'm wondering is when do you do the next bottom feeding and how do you do it? Do you fill another cup with water and just "dip" it in when needed?

I also understand about watering around the edge of a pot and not directly on the seedling...but is it just the transfer of water in the soil that prevents the root from drying out? So it's getting moisture from the soil soaking up water from the edge without dumping the water on the seedling and flooding it basically?

Roots seek moisture ..key is to stimulate their growth. If you water near them stem, roots won‘t have a reason to expand.

Once you have moistened your cup you cover it with the dome and put it 24 hrs into your grow room in order to have nice temps in the cup (+/-80F). Then you drop the seed, cover it again and take a note of the weight it has. Then you place it back into your well tempered grow space and wait until the seedling breaks soil ... during this time you do NOTHING but wait. Once the baby is above soil you uncover the plant. Next day to that will be the first time you water it. Fill the water corresponding to the lost weight into the outer cup and then the inner one into it ... repeat this daily till transplant.

i started using a heatmat , when all else failed with my meph seeds , left the light on 24hrs until the seedling took

Heating mats can be too hot, better to increase the ambient temperature if possible. If using a heat mat, a temp control is highly suggested. Glad it helped, but just be careful with hot spots with heating pads. Peace, slow
