Lighting Grow Diary. Three Afghan Kush Ryder and one Critical Cheese.

Have reordered the seeds, the freebie has changed from Delicious seeds Critical Jack Herer to Dinafem seeds Critical Cheese Auto.

Is there any way i can edit the thread title or is that a job for a mod ?

They should arrive by Monday latest.

The new seeds arrived :

I've put them in tumblers of water and will wait until the taproot has grown before putting them in damp kitchen towel wrapped in clingfilm :

The tumblers are in a warm, dark place (the growbox) :

Now wait for the gorgeous little things to pop :)

The new growbox is a foot igher than the old one so i have ordered 3L pots instead of using the old 2L pots.

May as well maximise the plant size/yield, matching the increased box size.

Hi :)

So the critical cheese had a weird little bump on it when it was dry, something i've not seen before.

Now that it's been 36 hours germing, looks like the bump has detached from the seed :

cheese_germ.jpg

Maybe some kind of husk like you get with organic rice ? I dunno ...

The AKR's now have tiny little tails, so by the 48 hour mark it'll be time for planting :

akr_germ.jpg

You can't see the taproots so it's a boring photo !

So they should befully germed by tomorrow, which is when the 3L pots should arrive.

Can't wait to do the 'day 1' post :)

Just looking at the ciritcal cheese photo and thinking, i hope it hadn't started germing before it arrived and that's what the bump was, because that detached bit looks suspiciously like a taproot ?

Every grow brings new mysteries !

Have transferred the seeds to damp kitchen towel wrapped in clingfilm :

Should be around midday tomorrow they get planted.

Today is a good day :)

So the 3L pots arrived :

Here is how they compare to the 2L pots :

2L vs 3L pots.jpg

Plant Magic compost, nice and airy mix, low nutrient level :

pm bag.jpgpm compost.jpg

I filled the pots with compost :

put soil.jpg

Poured half as much water as the pots total volume (so 1.5L of water) :

pour water.jpg

Allow the excess water to runoff and see the soil level drop :

run off after half.jpgsoil level after water.jpg

Fill to the top with more soil then add more water until that runs off :

more dry soil.jpg

Final wet soil level :

soil full.jpg

The AKR seeds have all cracked :

AKR_sprouts.jpg

The Critical Cheese isn't quite there yet but maybe later on today.

I made a half-inch hole with a scredriver tip and, using tweezers, placed the AKR seeds in the hole so that the seed casing is level with topsoil :

before cover.jpg

Then i dropped a dollop of soil on top of that, no pressing down just covering.

My first vapouriser arrived yesterday, a £20 cheapy from ebay that has great reviews all over the net, i tried it and it is L O V E L Y i must say :)

vp100.jpg

And more good news, got a phone call from attitude seedbank, the person who was incorrectly delivered my first seed order returned them to the seedbank !

So i have 3 more AKR plus a Critical Jack Herer on the way :) :)

Will post an update when the Cheese cracks.

eddit add - Thanks to the mod who changed my thread name :)

The Critical Cheese had a weird bump on it when it arrived, then the bump detached itself when i had it in the first stage of germination in a glass of water. I think this was it's taproot :(

It hasn't improved in the kitchen towel/clingfilm :

I think she's a gonner :(

Luckily i have a spare in my freebie box :

critical cheese spare.jpg

So that will go into a glass of water now, unfortunately it'll be 2 or 3 days behind the AKR's but such is life ...

Yes, definitely a bad seed so waiting for the backup to germinate.

I've cut the shelf to go on the bracketing system, nice and easy to change plant heights with this :

shelf.jpg

This is the bulb i will be using for vegging (6400k) :

bulb.jpg

The bulb is 23,400 Lumens and the 'economic lifetime' is 8,000 hours.

I have only done one grow with this bulb so it has plenty left in it yet.

The flowering bulb is 250 watts @ 19,500 Lumens with the same lifespan, i have done 5 grows with it totalling :

18 (hours per day) x 80 (days per grow) x 5 (grows) = 7,200 hours

Plus one grow where i used the veg light at first so :

18 (hours per day) x 50 (days this grow) = 900 hours

Which is (7,100 + 900) = 8,100 hours.

So this will be the last grow with this flowering bulb then i will switch to LED.
