Hey all, I just had a question about growing medium and thought this would be the best place to ask.
I haven't actually grown my own for over 7 years (haven't grown autos before at all) but recently ordered some Sour Livers and AvT from seedsman and got my equipment sorted.

Having read the growing guide on the Mephisto website, a brilliant guide by the way, I have a question about this part :

"If you’re wanting to start in your final pot size and negate the transplant element, consider doing a raised/tiered transplant or having a split medium. Put the lighter soil in the top half of your container, and a more nutrient rich soil in the bottom half, so once plants are established they can start to draw nutrients from the reserves in the bottom, at which point with organics they will be way more resilient to stunting or being overfed."

I would like to start the seeds in their final pot sizes (15L) and was wondering what is the best way to sort out my growing medium. Will I have better luck with the split medium described above? If so, what ratio should I be doing each pot?
So for instance, if I were to be using biobizz lightmix and allmix, would it be a straight up 50/50 ratio?
If I wanted to also use the biotabs method that is described in the guide, will this change the desired ratio in any way?

Sorry for my very basic question, I just want to make sure that I can provide the absolute best environment for my seeds without making any big mistakes in the process.

I'd suggest using only lite mix and following the feeding schedule in the bio bizz thread or that used by some of the more experienced growers here.

You could fill the entire container with all-mix, and use a 1.5 liter pot to hollow out that volume of soil and replace with lightmix. Then personally I would just plain water for at least the first 2-2.5 weeks.

Alternatively you could use lightmix as a base, use biotabs starter kit to amend the soil and plain water for the majority of the grow, perhaps a feed or two of their pk booster when they get into their stride flowering.

If wanting to use lightmix - allmix in combination, I wouldn't add the tabs until they are around 15days old, 2 per 15 liter pot has worked for us, just like them down 5cm below the surface on either side of your plant.

But any of the above suggestions would also work.
Cheers!

That is a huge help thanks for the replies, much appreciated.
I really like this idea for the simplicity and seems like something I will be able to control within the realms of my abilities currently.

Good luck. Start a journal and if u run into a problem you have what u did to them documented and it's easier for the great growers here to give u a hand.

I use lightmix right through but used to have good success my towering my soil. Bottom third allmix, middle third 50/50 allmix/lightmix and top third light mix.

Thank you, and yes I will certainly do this. I'm just in the process of clearing out and disinfecting the room that I would like to put my tent in, hopefully I'll get that finished by the end of the weekend and can start straight away. I've spent the last couple of months trying to put as much research into the matter as I can so I can show the plants the love they deserve. I've found some brilliant threads on this forum that have helped me plan my grow, so its great to have this information at my disposal from people with a wealth of experience.
