A "hermie" known as a hermaphrodite in plant biology is a plant that has both male & female characteristics & "parts"; it basically means the said plant can fertilize itself and produce seeds to further its generation.
A cannabis plant has 3 sex(s) - A male, which produces pollen. A female, which produces pistils & the neccecasry developmental things needed to produce seeds once it has been fertilized by another male plant, or a hermie, which displays both sex(s).
Cannabis can turn into a hermie in a number of ways, the most common being from environmental/grower stress or directly from bad breeding/genetics. When a female (in this example) plant feels that it will not get fertilized by a male plant and has made all possible attempts to get fertilized, it will use its last biological resource in its inventory, and that is to active a number of genes to begin turning into a both male & female plant and thus fertilizing itself and producing seeds to further its generation in the wild.
As growers, we don't want seeds in our bud because when a plant begins the production of seeds it takes energy away from cannabinoid production (THC/CBG/CBD etc..); many growers make the mistake thinking that stressing a plant to fertilize itself will give you viable seeds to grow, this is not correct; a plant that has been stressed environmentally to produce male/female parts will activate a set of genes and the seeds will now have a high possibility of being hermies. Using compounds like colloidal silver on a female plant does not "stress" the plant into turning into a "hermie"/male plant it starves the plant of female chemicals (estrogen?) and thus the plant is forced to create male parts, this what breeders use commonly.
A hermie is also not a strain of cannabis plants; an example of a Cannabis strain would be Dutch Passion Auto Blueberry for example.
