Howdy:

Just throwing a topic out that I have not seen discussed too often.

Wondering what methods members are using to test new soil and amount of lime (or sulfur to lower) per gallon of soil, if necessary, is used to raise PH based on your reading.

I have read of a method of taking equal parts of soil from the bag (1/8 cup or so) and distilled water. Shaking and then allowing it to settle. Then using meter to get a reading from the cleared liquid.

Most of us seem to run PH'ed water thru and then get a reading with run-off and amend accordingly (or guess--this is where a guideline would be handy).

Any thoughts on this or your method of testing.

Take it easy.

I use a ph meter that has a 8 inch soil probe...accurate wizard 8..made by cwp instruments..it cost about $80 USD ,but well worth it...it even has a moisture meter for those who tend to overwater..and also to compare ph values in wet vs dry soil conditions in veg and flower.

I also use the accurate 8 wizard ph meter, how much lime depends on how low the reading is.

Got you on the wizard. Nice tool to have. Thanks fullauto and hereb4.

So, I will try the run of the mill run-off test. And try the sample method right out of the bag as described in my first comment. For comparison purposes.

Hugo - are you out there - any thoughts!

Getting a really accurate reading is tricky. From what I have read farmers, normally, have their soil tested with high tech equip via county or state agricultural agencies etc.

Take it easy.

Did a runoff test, which always comes out real low, so just adding lime now and figuring out how much to put in before pre soak, will have it locked in next couple grows! :)
