Iv'e been growing autos now for about two years and have grown several different stains. It's been a learning proccess with its share of problems and every grow iv'e done has been better than the previous one.I think I have finnaly mastered the growing process to where my weed is of a pretty good quality. The only problem I have is I am getting quite a stockpile of good weed but I have no way of getting rid of it.My son smokes my weed for back surgery pain and also has some friends that would buy some but he says that even though my weed does help with pain and gives him a good buzz it doesn;t have the sweet spicey smell that users he knows are looking for.I know what he's talking about because I smeeled some he got from a friend and none of my weed ever gets that smell, this is out of over a dozen different strains I have grown. The only one he said that was close to what the smell eveybody looks for was Auntys Duurty Dragon. When I was young we didn;t really care about the smell and just wanted a good high.I guess things have changed to where there are more fussy smokers out there more concerned with the smell than the potency to a certain extent.I guess I will keep on trying different varietys until I find that magic strain that has the smell and the kick that people are looking for.Any comments on this subject would be welcome,thanks.:helpme::shrug:

Smell is nice & varies with strain and growing method but is not directly related to potency or medicinal value.
You could have a AK that stunk the house down but was not as good medicinally as a white rhino that barely smells.
Obviously white rhino has moderate THC in comparison but fairly high CBD & is a cup winning medicinally recommended strain.
If one cares alot about smell it would probably be advisable to dry in a brown bag for 5-7days and then cure in the conventional method for however long the grower can wait, this will retain the smell & enhance the smoke.

Herb never Heard of the brown paper bag method to preserve smell. :thumb: I've noticed the same thing since I've started growing... There have been exceptions though that had that dank off the dealer smell... Aunty's Russian and Durrty Dragon ( almost an indescribable fruity diesel food smell. ) the Kvs had that lemon fuel funk while growing but is becoming more lemony as the cure goes on... The ghaze x c99 and diesel x c99 I couldn't keep my nose out of the jar, or my hand...
The Pheno white widow I had was by far the stinkest of all so far... Just under an ounce stunk the entire house up, almost could smell it outside...
Terepenes are the smells... I think that autos due to the ruddy gene don't smell as much (just an uneducated guess...) which make them great for stealth growing... Maybe others can chime in with some other auto strains have that "smell "

Good thread ;)

I wonder if nutes play a part of the smell? i notice alot of my grows smell very similar...I also know the weed about these days when done properly smells amazing lol....i think some strains are known to smell more such as your cheeses....I also think the cure plays a real big factor as ive read how it brings peoples smell back....on top of that ive managed to have enough bud to last 8 weeks....and the jar i forgot about smells 10xs stronger than the stuff i was smelling after a short cure.

Longer you leave it better it gets,I dont worry about the smell as i know the weed i get from the decent strains i do is spot on and the smell is there wen i break open a bud. Even family and friends have said the same smelly weed doesn't mean its potent IMO:smokebuds:

suppose the smell is just more of a sales pitch lol exactly the same with these purple strains

You could have a good point Yoda.Autos may not have the kind of smell on average they are talking about. It's my guess that the weed my son is talking about is a non auto and therefore has that certain smell.I think the strength is more important than the smell and Iv'e grown some autos lately that are pretty dam strong.I'm not going to worry about the smell as long as the potency is up there. If I do run across a sweet spicey strain and is a ass kicker I will pass it along to all of my AFN friends,in the mean time I'll just keep the lights on my girls and except what they give me.:smokebuds:

Very cool topic, I was just having this same type of convo yesterday.

Yoda makes a great point with the ruddy genes. And SI also hit it dead on with allowing it cure longer it will get a better smell & taste.

I grew my Double Diesel Ryder which stunk so bad I had to buy an ozone generator and this was only one plant. But when I chopped I could smell for a day but than IMO that brown paper bag method ruined the Double diesel. I did not like the smell it retained in those bags very plenty smell, than I placed into a jar, I tasted them that day and they were not smelly nor tasted good or anything like Diesel, but knocked my ass right out. I tasted last night after like 2 weeks in jar and they are def stickier, taste and smell better and one hit put me out again! no where near what i can by on the streets, the dealers not stronger but has better smell and taste which is essence means our autos have lil to none bag appeal compared to a dealers photos. Now I just hung dry my cheese berry and the while during that process she smelt like heaven, yes when u put ur nose like all in the box you could still smell that planty smell but way more better smell and feel of buds (sticky already) with the hang dry method. I placed them into jars today and they already stink and smell way better than my diesel that's been curing for two weeks and the diesel was way more pungent. So IMO your drying and curing methods are very key on top of all the other factors lol. But I would never do that brown paper bag method again.

Smell for me is half the reason I smoke (stoner) know what you mean Namvet (or your son) the weed I buy on the street seems to smell more in the bag
Also agree with Si that a cure seems to make certainly my BB Cheese better after 3 weeks, it's got another 2 now so will let you know
I'm smoking dodgy Spanish weed atm that stinks my balcony out! :D

I am only on my second Auto grow so my knowledge is very limited. My first, Polar Lights, had almost no smell at all throughout the entire grow. Even when chopped and manicure it didn't have much smell. I was pretty disappointed originally but it has been curing for about two months now and when I open the jar it has developed an excellent aroma, right on par with any photos I have ever grown or smelled. I have some Blue Himalaya growing now and it is about 6 weeks in and is already smelling very skunky so I think it will be a pretty stinky cure. I am with si and OOO, a longer cure in glass jars really helps intensify the aroma. I also think air movement has something to do with it as well. I have a shit ton of air flow in my tent. My AC unit pushes 260 cfm and I have 63 cfm in my tent so the air is getting turned over over 4 times per minute. This pretty much scrubs the air and dilutes the smell quite a lot. I think less airflow would allow the aromas to condense better in the plant. That is just an opinion though.

To answer your question, smell is important for me when purchasing but not so important for my homegrown. I don't sell it so I could care less what anyone else thinks about it. Potency is a must have for me though.
