Lighting How much is "too much" light?

As the thread heading asks ... is there such a thing as too much light?

What is the maximum LED a plant can take before it impacts negatively?
As a seedling?
In veg?
In flower?

Or ... is it simply a case of the more, the merrier?

Is the negative impact from too much light?
Or is it light that is too close? [or too far]

I have never come across anyone who had a problem with too much light.
Think about this a 600w HPS puts out an incredible amount of light and lumens, No LED around that wattage can compare to it, not even close.
I have seen many people starting seeds under a 600w HPS or even a 1000w HPS with no problems at all.
The only problem is at this stage in the plants life cycle its doesn't get the chance to use all that light very efficiently so its more of a waste of a electricity more than anything.
Just bare in my mind the amount of heat all that light carries , this would be the only thing i would be worried about but with LEDS you should be just fine as they have almost no heat.
Obviously the more light the better in flower as this really helps with bud production but in veg you can take it easy.

I've seen photographs (you can't just say "photos" on a weed site, can you?) on line of plants that were bleached white at the top from too much light, always with LEDs, as the lower temps allow you to get too close. I have no first hand experience with this, however, so toss that one in your "heard it on the net" pile.

So, can we assume that we can have as much light as we care to pay for, as long as the temps are strictly controlled, and it is hung at a certain distance?

How do we determine a 'safe' distance?

Or, is it just an 'unknown' ?

Exactly Yozhik if the lights produce too much heat or are too close to the plant this is what you have to worry about.
The manufacture should be able to give you a plant canopy distance for which ever LED grow light you pan to buy.
If you buy more than one of the same LED grow light, they would all be hung at the same distance as per the recommendation of the manufacture.
Usually to determine a safe distance for the light over the plant. Put your hand at top of plant canopy under the light. If your hand feels any heat bring the light away from the plant.

So, it would seem there IS "too much light" ... but we don't know how much that actually is?

i.e. how many actual watts per sq.ft would be considered "too much light", and morph into photoinhibition?
