With recent news coming out in the States about several different agencies checking cellular phone data and spying on their citizens I have seen some questions about how much info pictures contain. I thought I would make a short tutorial on how to strip exif data from your pictures. Exif data for anyone unfamiliar with this, is metatags that are embedded in photos. This data could be as little as the ISO, image size, and things like this that aren't really a concern to you but it also may contain very important information such as GPS coordinates, name and such. This is even more prevalent in newer smart phones and cameras that are being used. So, it is always important to make sure you strip data from your pictures before posting them on the internet.
This tutorial was made using WIN7, if you are using another Windows release it should be about the same and if you can't figure it out you can always PM me with your OS and I will walk you through it. There are also free programs out there that will strip the data for you such as ExifTool which can be downloaded here -> http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/
So the first thing you want to do is locate your picture and right click on it.
From there, select properties and at the top of the Properties window you will select Details.
That will open up a new window. At that point make sure "Create a copy with all properties removed" is ticked and select OK.
At that point, you will have a copy of the picture with all data removed. You will be able to tell the first picture from the one with data removed as the latest one will say "Copy" in the file name. I always make a point of deleting the old picture with data in it so there are never any concerns in the future.
I hope this little tutorial helps you in your quest to stay safe on the internet. Remember, you are only as safe as the least safe person. Be careful who you talk to and share personal information with. You never know who is on the other side of that mouse!
