OK I'm new to the hps & mh lights my question is if you have good ventilation in the tent do you need a tube? Is it worth the money to buy one with the tube?

hey peanut8!

I think it depend alot also on the ambient temperature outside the tent.
Personalty i had a 400w HPS with standard reflector in a 60x60x140 tent and i did run into temperature problems so i got a 125mm cool-tube and it has made my temp drop by 4 degrees Celsius.
but as i said, my outside temp are around 20 degrees Celsius so the air going into the tent is already decently warm so for me the cool-tube was a must, especially when the plants got taller and closer to the light. but if you are bringing in cooler air temperatures and have good air circulation and extraction i'm sure you could do without a cool-tube.

also by installing a cool-tube i was able to lower the light closer to the canopy of the plants, that helped getting more light to the lower budding sites in my slightly over crowed tent.

hope this helped you in one way or another.

peace,

I completely agree with tasty buds - Having previously used HPS, i regretted not having a cool tube or air cooled hood - seeing how close others could get the light to the plants. I struggle with temps (without a cool tube) with a 250w HPS in a 60cm x 60cm x 180cm cab

IMHO unless your running an open room grow a air cooled hood is a must for a hid in a grow tent....temps and air exchange are key! :karma Cloud: Your way! A little extra $$ will save you a lot of $$$$ in the long run....
:stylez rasta smoke:

I make do without air cooled shading at the moment. It will most likely be a different story in the summer though.

But i wont be getting a cool tube i will be going for a standard parabolic or some kind of air cooled parabolic as i love the even light spread they give off.
