@CaNNaDON420 and i are looking into more light a potential diy led build in future. but were looking at needing more sooner than that. im not asking about brands or anything. we have a decent led already and a few t12's in our 4x4x6 tent. 1000w led. "pushing a bit over 300 true watts in tent total."

add 600watt hps or add another led ?

The most popular answer will be DIY cobs...
But it's all based on your need, timing, budget ect. I have a 4×4×6 with both led (900w, pulling 400w from the wall) plus a 600w hps. I will eventually convert over to strictly cob, but I dont have the time or budget at the moment. Adding a 600w hps for "additional" lighting might not be the best option price wise though. I started with hps, and added leds as additional light. You'll need more cooling, more extraction, ducting, less headroom, have more noise ect. if you add an hps set up as additional lighting. But yeah, I do both, lol..

The 315w lec/cmh lights are supposed to be the bee's knees. I've been talking to mitch about them recently, and he is very impressed. I have no first hand experience with them myself, but I will probably get one soon. If thats in your budget I would try one of those.

looks a little steep. and this style of light is new to me. ill have to do some looking into this. but if we had to go the cheaper route. do u prefer the led or hps? thanks buddy. and i think the girls are starting to get into the supersoil mix in bottom. starting to get vigorous ;)

If cooling your tent isnt a concern I would go dot the hps. If it is a concern go for the led.

400 watt hps and two 96 reflectors . Heat isn't really to much an issue .

So here's where I'm hung up on the idea that LEDs produce less heat than HID lighting.. True, if not vented, HID lights get extremely hot, however, how many of you are venting your LED panels?? For the nearly 3yrs of me growing exclusively w/ LED, my grow area temps were consistently higher than my current HID grow.. In fact, my grow box, w/ only 1 exhaust fan running, will see an average of mid-80's/26C+, which isn't as big a deal since plants grown under LED can have a higher leaf-surface-temperature, however w/ my HID set-up in my smaller tent, I have yet to see the temps exceed 80F.. Depending on the size of your area, you can get away without venting HID lights, so if that's an option, you may want to take it.. COBs are great, and I'm growing with some as we speak, however the cost, when compared to HID lighting is higher, if you want quality and equivalence.. I bought my Mars II panel for ~$200, used it for a couple years, and then converted it, but that came at a cost of about $275 for the COBs themselves, and then an additional $20 for supplies like thermal paste and kapton tape.. I just purchsed a 600w e-ballast (not eBay special), large enclosure and bulb for less than $225 and since I already had a scrubber and fan, there's no additional costs to me other than some small sections of piping and some clamps or duct tape..

200 would buy you a basic DIY cob set up mate. Easy to assemble. Mental results. Do it.

Call me crazy, but I doubt the $200 DIY kit will provide the same PAR and lumens as a 600w HPS.. I know there are some folks out there who have tested it, but from the 200w of CXB3590s (that's 50w more of COB than the $200 kit) I have, it's not even close to the brightness of a good 600w HPS.. That's both anecdotal and by virtue of my light meter.. I'm not trying to start arguments; just going off of my observations..

I will also note that I will more than likely be combining the 600w HPS and the DIY COB Panel I have for the best spectrum and light spread.. I feel there is a lot of merit to using both since it provides a broader spectrum, not to mention the LEDs seem to coax out more trichs, from all of the grows I've seen on here and other forums..
