Grow Mediums I got this lava rock.

So I got this lava rock I bought when I was buying an aquarium today

but this lava rock I bought only to put in my reservoir/dwc tote because I thought I could maybe add a nice home for my beneficial bacteria in the Cannazym from CANNA

but not sure yet so I decided to start this threat

I'm unaware of any use of lava rock in dwc, but it is used in soil sometimes. It would theoretically provide lots of surface area for bennies (beneficial organisms) to grow on, but I'm not sure if that's needed in dwc...? Couldn't hurt trying at least I'd wash them really good first. Wouldn't want them leaching some mystery chems from the uh, lava rock factory? Lols

You can use lava rock in place of hydroton on DWC, its light weight and works well if broken in to the right size prices. There are no chems in it, its just expanded rock

In a marine aquariums beneficial bacteria grow/live in lava rock and help towards filtration. Lava rock is also used directly in canister filters for the same reason. It's very porous and has a large surface area and more importantly is inert.
Not to be confused with ocean rock which is basically calcium, so will raise your ph.

Hahahaha super nice to get all the reasons I wanted to do this from the people I been following the most in the last weeks

Yeah why not is what I been thinking, I am a aquerium nerd also and the one I got today was 4-5 I had in my life and lava rocks are awesome to maintain a good environment for the fish so why not for the plants ?, was reading some organic threat the other day where they talk about lava rock to maintain environment because the clay pebbles has to smooth of a surface or something =)

then it made me think if the airstone was a good area for it to breed at or even the clay pebbles so I bought this lava rock just for the res, thinking about doing two lowryder types autofemas in the summer and have a lava rock in one and not in the other and then watch witch the PPM drops faster, not going to give me accurate results but at least something


also I washed it and then boiled it for 2 hours and left it in the pot without taking the lid off but instead I wrapped plastic wrap around the edge so less bacteria gets in, home beer brewing trick I learned this summer

when the rock is cold tomorrow I will drop him in ... maybe I should soak him in cannazym mixture first !

1 big lava rock isn't going to have much effect either way, other than take up space, in my opinion.
We used to use marble sized lava rock for a filter medium when hydroton and leca had to be obtained from industrial sources.
