Microscope is necassary until you get an eye for plants being done. Look it up - jeweler's loupes work well too.
I haven't used a microscope ever though but I can agree with their usefulness.
I make sure almost all "hairs" are red and receded into the flower. If they are white and still sticking out a lot you have time. The bud will also look less green and more finished (sorry I can't explain this better). After a few grows you'll be able to tell IMO. Otherwise grab a scope and look at those tric forests
