Just Genetics or Grower Error?

Had one this season, called her Anomalie, stunted pale yellow, for weeks it seemed, then boom, she turns a nice forest green and grows, most mutant flowers I've seen, and she covers herself, leaves and all, with resin, smells like turpentine, kicks like a mule in the night

Also, I'm using KindSoil this grow, so only plain ol' h2o for her, no nutes.

I think maybe some plants start life unable to uptake nutrients, stay small, look poorly, then it's off to the races, like a switch has been flipped
