fucking finally, i'm getting down to actual business. 5*1212@3000k+holder+130mm heatsink@1400mah, should hopefully be here by the end of next week.

I know they're not the best cobs on the market, but at 50w they're only marginally weaker than the 1818s, v29s or 3590s - about 7400 lm, compared with about 8000 - for less than half the price. i know @BigSm0 isn't a huge fan, but they seemed like the best value for a drop in light production that a complete newbie probably wouldn't even notice.

is an X shaped light (the old growmau5 3x3 style) the best way to set up 5 cobs for a 1m*1m tent?

I don’t have anything against them. Not really heard anything bad about them either so that’s good. I contacted a company about 6 months ago inquiring about a new light design. The price came back almost to cheap. That’s when I started asking questions. Will the driver come with the authentication code ext.. she told me the code would cost more. Wait a second, they come this way from the factory. She told me this came from a factory near meanwell but not actually manwell. This is all to common. Then the version of cobs or binning. Most cobs don’t have markings for people to tell exactly what they are getting. So how do you really know what your getting. I look at it this way, I’d rather deal with someone I trust than someone I know would screw me. None of this really has to do with this situation but it’s more of a buyer beware message to people stepping outside even kingbrighy who does seem to have a good reputation. I also know what a budget is and sometimes it’s worth the risk. It’s good to see so many people going to cobs. The impact growing has on the world is real and growing each minute. Cobs atleast help slow some of this burden.

oh, i was talking about the 1212s that you're not a fan of. anyway, i went with kingbrite because my local market is terrible so i had to go international, and they're the cheapest. if you can source locally, there's probably no upside to ordering from them.
buyer beware is good advice though, especially around alibaba/express - but there are real solid deals to be made. dhgate, for instance, has some really (realllllly) nice glass manufacturers (bongs, pipes, those dab straw things) sprinkled into a sea of fucking straight garbage, if not straight up cons.

i'm really intrigued about using these to supplement our produce supply. i'm planning to use these to do peppers and tomatoes over the summer. the idea of running a perpetual container garden in a tent is very appealing to me. all of which is to say, never mind cannabis growing, the future of agriculture - considering global warming, population growth, urbanization, etc - will be indoors. advances in led technology will have a lot to do with both the viability and quality of produce in the future.
for instance, why couldn't you make an arduino controller that perfectly mimics native light cycles (even including light spectrum, theoretically) for landrace genetics?

Hey @BigSm0 ....what does all this mean "...Will the driver come with the authentication code ext.. she told me the code would cost more."? What is an authentication code? And wouldn't Mean Well drivers that are made next door or down the road, be a counterfeit? I have two 240/1050s. They are in identical chassis, but came from 2 different factories. The stickers are a tad different and the wiring colors on the dimming circuit are different colors from each other. I have heard about counterfeit Meanies....I got mine from Arrow a couple months apart and that's what they sent. Thanks Big.

....whatever it is, it works. Love me some KAAAHBS

I’m sure a reputable company like arrow would only sell legit parts. The woman I spoke to gave me a quote for a light with a knock off driver. It was -10 dollars cheaper. Honestly couldn’t care if it was 50 dollars cheaper. Peace of mind is worth more than that. I hope I’m not stirring up a mess here. Kingbright has a good rep, arrow does as well. The guy selling selling cobs for 3bucks can pound sand lol.

You'll find they're exactly the same, genuine, driver, one is labelled and cabled for the Chinese market and the other for the "Western" market.

Fedex guy just left. everything seems to be in order (driver is chinese market version, but whatever), except one heatsink has maybe 5-6 pretty bent pins. Shouldn't affect it too much.

Going to try and sketch out some frame shapes on cardboard. Measure often, buy/cut once, right?

Always, and if you're going to be "shaping" anything then get your design on a sheet of paper so you can use that as a template so you mark your metal or whatever in the right place first time so any bits that fold or bend into position are in the right place.

No folding planned, just aluminum profiles.

Any advice on cob spacing? I've been trying to dig into it but there's just fuckloads of information, half of it contradicts and it's hard to make heads or tails of any of it.
@BigSm0

You say no folding, but when the DIY bug bites you....

Trust me, you'll make your light, and even it does everything you expected and more you'll think "How can I improve this"...
