what heats the kiln?

I made one it came out real good but it cracked when I was using it but I also did 3 runs in a row with it.

Here's a couple I did last night They both cracked I almost don't like making anything for fear of the cracking but I still do I need the practice. It seems like the ones that crack are usually my favorites.
