I also wanted to mention that it seems like you can get pretty close to the LED when the plant is more mature. I've seen as shallow as 4"-6" work okay without burning on 180w.

I'm running all LEDs for flowering and MH/CFL for veg, but have also vegged with my LEDs. For seedlings I would suggest putting it at about 16 - 18" to start. Watch your node spacing and try to keep it at right around an inch by raising or lowering your light accordingly. Once you get into flower you can lower it. Depending on the size of your area and the number of plants you are growing you may be able to get it down to 8 - 10" as long as you are still getting good coverage on all your plants.

Bleaching issues have been from some of the newer, higher intensity LEDs. The early 2011 GLH lights had problems with bleaching. I've also recently seen 1 or 2 from the newest Blackstars. It will start with the top leaves going yellow/white from the middle of the leaves working toward the outer edges. If you see any signs of this, immediately raise your light.

I have a 1000 watt hps and 5 plants just planted how far do you guys think this light should be as they do run a little hotter ...I just mean for seedlings

i know youre asking about seedlings specifically but just thought id put this up for handyness.

i just keep them as far away(or atleast the bottom end of the scale in that image) as you can if theyre like 1 day old and slowly move them up bit by bit day by day, check with the back of your hand under the light at the height to check if its too hot. play it safe watch for stretch. the hps will probably make them stretch a bit more aswell, best to use 6000ish k spectrum for veg and 3000'ish k spectrum for flower

or just use a cfl till they need the hps. probably easiest/safer.
