That is not a trash can. It is a compost bin, you can tell by the green compostable bag. The trash can is on the other side of the counter. The recycle bins are outdoors. They are all part of my standard kitchen inventory. I cannot even imagine where your friend keeps all of the empty Mickey's? Perhaps he has one of these in his kitchen.
