Going off the meds is particularly a problem for those with Schizophrenia. The process there is that the normal med make you into a bit of a zombie, and the patient knows that they are a bit of a zombie, which is continuously unpleasant for some. Also, they know that if they quit the meds, they will get a few awesome days before the disease takes over, by which time they don't realize how poor they are functioning. The thinking seems to be, sometimes, that the few good days are worth the cost.Yes. I've seen this countless times in my work as a counselor.
People who become well enough to be discharged from hospital end up there again.
Another often stated reason is that the drug side effects are intolerable to them.
Sometimes there's paranoia that the police and doctors (and everyone) are trying to poison them..... psychosis is a horrible thing to live with.
