I wondered whether you boiled the shrooms. I have not tried it, but apparently they are delicious if sliced up fresh and simmered first to extract or chemically change whatever the toxins are. As I recall there are several, just not the more deadly ones found in other members of the group. My problem is that by the time they flush, there are a lot of other edibles available that I like, so why bother with the fuss. I did not know that this species was useful for medical purposes like what you describe. Usually, they are taken raw for their hallucinogenic properties, but I suspect that most who try them fresh for that purpose do not do it twice.
