Damn people make autopots look easy. Sounds like more of a headache. Maybe the self watering bases is what Ill stick with. Have great luck with them. And still easy to water and keeps my bad watering habits out of the equation. Thanks for your opinion. I Trust your guys advice.
FWIW, any subirrigation system presents a similar issue with nute buildup in the medium. In my opinion, you are better off going with top irrigation with runoff as it keeps more of your medium in better shape than subirrigation can.
You could do a lot worse than setting up a top irrigation system as described in Cocoforcannabis.com. Coco needs more management than soil mix, but it is in my opinion a lot more forgiving than other media once you get onto it. The key is automating the fertigation, using top watering design, and keeping the ph under control.
OTOH, if you really truly will not or cannot stand the hassle of salt nutes, you can get decent result with a less hassle during the grow by using large pots with soil mix of some sort. I did try that a couple times, but found I like coco better. Others here may be able to help you get connected with an effective soil mix, I never managed to get that sorted to my satisfaction.
Good luck with it, I hope you get things sorted for the next grow.
