I did a 35 year career as a high voltage switching station electrician. I had a crew doing live barehand work in my station and the foreman suited me up and took me up in an insulated bucket and I barehanded 138kv. The suit was a lightweight fabric with wire interwoven. First they use a hotstick to bond the suit to the line and then you just reach out and grab the line. Absolutely insane feeling as the current flows around you in the suit.
Just thinking about doing something like that sends shivers down my spine!

I got zapped on a minesweeper when someone pulled the tags and energized the circuit on a package AC unit in a berthing compartment. The ship's company totally broke tag out protocol, because it would acquired my signature and initials to clear the tags and pull them.
I came back to work after lunch and the next thing I knew I was hearing somebody screaming......................... And that someone was me! I was all the way across the berthing compartment. Yeah, it was a minesweeper, so it was only about 20 feet. I think shock caused my leg muscles to flex, which was the biggest cause for me being across the compartment.

When I finally realized exactly what happened, I was so enraged! I don't know how I kept my cool, but I left that boat immediately. My chief and Division officer saw and stopped me on the way back to the shop. After telling them what happened, We immediately went to the IMA CO's office. We were there about 5 minutes and that adrenaline began to wear off. I only had small burn marks on where it went in, on my hand, and where it exited, the top of my shoulder on the same arm. That's when the muscle and joint pain kicked in. That stayed around pretty prominent for about A week.

Heads did roll on that little boat
