Good morfnoevight all you sleepy stoners.
Took a ride up into the Sierras today to our friends 130 acres of forest. I have not been up there in over 7 years. Time flies! The last time we were up there he was working on a grant with some local indian advisors on how to manage the forest to keep fires from leaving the ground and turning into a crown fire. When the Creek Fire hit 5 years ago the strategy ended up saving the town of Shaver Lake. When the fire came roaring up the canyon it burned about 1/3 of his property before it dropped to the ground and was then controlled and stopped by the fire crews about half way through his land. The devastation is mind blowing. This strategy saved the town above him as the fire burned on both sides up to the tree line right around the town. Since the fire he has been reforesting the property. It is a massive undertaking. He has planted many thousands of trees, sugar pines, ponderosa pines, white pines, Cedar trees, Giant Sequoias (well in 2000 years), Lollipoping the Black Oaks that regrow from the stumps of the burned trees and so many more I cannot remember. He is currently working on what is called undergrowth trees. We planted a hazel nut tree. The idea was to help him plant more trees but he was more interested in surveying the work that has been done previously. We drove around for hours. It seems so sad that the losses are about 80% due to bugs, voles, gophers dear and brush that grows faster and shades the trees to death. Then there are the trees that just die for no known reason. He is so optimistic and 20% survival is enough to keep him working on it. I have so much respect for him. Without his efforts to control the brush on this small piece of forest it will never grow back. The brush grows so fast that the trees never have a chance to get started. It will burn again and again forever to remain chaparral. We are the only one that can make it a forest again. It takes dedication and an unbelievable amount of work fighting back the brush. If I had another life to live it would be up there with him.
