I’m going to have to be vague about this, but….
Back in 06 and 7, I was in a position to speak regularly, at length with Iraqis that had essentially been through the apocalypse, their society had collapsed…. And I started asking each one to tell me their story about that collapse (I heard hundreds). It wasn’t what I thought I was going to hear… It was neighbors turning on neighbors, using their and our government to get what they wanted (many times it was the neighbors house, wife, etc that they wanted…. Or just political/religious differences). They would make up a reason why this person was bad, quantify it to the authorities, and bam…disappeared. (Not to mention the general destruction that happens in a society at war). Many of these people were totally innocent (many weren’t, though)…. But their whole lives were turned upside down in a matter of minutes.
I see a similar thing happening here, everyone is skeptical of everyone else. There’s an heir of “I’m better than you” about. People are, or have chosen sides. And the government seems to want it.
And, to be clear, anyone that’s playing the side versus side game is missing the point entirely. Americans. Every one of us is an American. The opposing political party, those are Americans too. The states are no longer united, as intended. We are all one. But we’ve forgotten.
