My understanding is the Florigen, the hormone responsible for bloom is created in the leaves during darkness.

Does trimming the bigger fan leaves therefore delay onset of bloom?

I hope not, I've been lopping them off as soon as they get in the way of watering. This grow the big lower fan leaves started getting powdery mildew spots, so I chopped then off quick and reduced watering and turned down the RH to 45% and dowsed everybody with Southern Ag organic fungicide. There was an article about various stresses that can speed up onset of flowering.
