Hope I can remember this when the time comes...an excerpt from Ed Rosenthal's Mari Growers Handbook, the section on LIGHT:

METAL HALIDES & ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT (UV)
UV light is composed of spectrums beyond blue that are invisible to humans but are visible to many animals. UV light is divided into three bands - UVA, UVB and UVC. UVB is critical to the development of THC. The potency of marijuana is dependant on the amount of UVB light it receives. Metal halides emit UV light and can be used for this purpose.

Even if plants are being grown under HPS lamps, potency - that is THC content - WILL INCREASE SIGNIFICANTLY if they are replaced with metal Halides during the last two weeks of flowering. (My note: HERE'S THE CATCH). Just be aware that the protective glass in air-cooled MH fixtures absorbs UV light before it gets to your garden. So the only way to benefit from the UV output is to REMOVE THE GLASS and take other steps to cool the light.

Looks like I'll be re-installing the window A/C unit in the tent!
Someone, PLEASE REMIND ME TO GIVE THIS A SHOT!

Does Ed say what the significant increase maybe?????

1% THC increase..5%...10%....or more???

Doing research as we speak...I just ordered some cheap reptile lights (3 ea) which produce the 10% UVB lighting suggested. I'll put all 3 in the tent the last two weeks. The actual increase in potency...I haven't discovered yet, HOWEVER, some dispensaries in CA won't even discuss a purchase with a grower unless: A - The plant was forced to ripen on Aug 10 due to the max UVB or B - The indoor crop was grown with between 10-20% UVB wattage to finish the last two weeks. Ed is not the only source of info here. In Mari Cultivation Reconsidered, there is a footnote to testing done in this area by J. Lydon (1986) "Effects of UVB radiation on the growth, physiology and cannabinoid production of Cannabis sativa L." None of my other text books even refer to this possibility. Gonna see if I can find that report...

Hey Clem...
That's a new one on me...Yield Lab. The name alone is intriguing!

I am having an issue with my EYE Hortilux MH BLUE 400W, It will start and at times it will not start on my xtrasun Dial-a-Watt Ballast. If it doesn't start I will unplug the ballast replug the lamp and then it will start up. At least that's been the issue lately. I emailed my concern to the manufacturer. I haven't heard from them. Any help from MH user's will be appreciated.

Switched to a higher rated timer. This timer is rated for indoor air conditioner on/off. Let's see if this will help.

Update: The lamp did start last night. Let's see if the newer timer does the trick.
