I have a Viparspectra KS3000 in my 3x3 tent.

It's been good to me and it provides enough DLI but it's DLI everything?

I'm looking to upgrade for my 3x3 space.
That is if an upgrade would help me get bigger thicker buds?

Is it just DLI or is it the quality of the light also every bit as important?

Any suggestions for a higher quality 3x3 light?

The DLI is essentially the cumulative photosynthetic light/photons over time. Beyond that, DLI is not all that informative about the light fixture or the light it's putting out. DLI includes all the relevant light frequencies/wavelengths, which have varying intensities. Each light (model) has its own unique spectra. Also lights vary in how they spread or focus (or not) emitted light, spacing of LEDs, etc. - lots of variables that can affect penetration and other important factors.

So yes, even if lights provide the same DLI measurements at the spots you measure it, that doesn't mean they have the same or an optimal spectra and performance in terms of growing. Even a super cheap blurple lights can meet your target DLI's.
