Live Stoner Chat my thought about lights

Light is energy I believe you should use the maximun amount of lumens that you can possibly get at all times. If you really want to emulate the sun use MH and hps toghether but at full strength for the whole 12 hours or 24 hours if auto. My own personal motto the more light the merrier the plant. That being said you need the temps at a certain level at all times and circulation correct at all times. Outdoors imo is a crap shoot at best animals can trample them dig them up and if to much moisture when ready mold will set in. indoors you can control almost all aspects of growing. One of the biggest mistakes a indoor grower does is goes into his or hers room with the clothes they have been wearing all day mites can hook a ride on you and BAM your plants are infested. Or rose gardens along or near your house mites love them

An example is the fact that even though the sun puts out around 5K lumens at ground level, how much of that is expressed as heat, or green/yellow spectrum? When you whittle away all the non PAR/PPFD light what you're left with isn't all that much more, if at all, than what we have in our indoors grows.

edit: 5k Lumens is an average, and is per sq foot.

exactly

at 5000 lumens with fluorescents photosynthetic activity is at 80% of maximum. increasing that to 10000 lumens raises activity to 95% of max so you clearly reach a point of diminishing returns.it is up to you to decide if the slight gain is worth the higher electric bill. I grow MMJ for my SO who struggles with cancer so all expenses come out of my pocket and for me the answer is that the gain is not worth the cost but for a commercial grower it may be.I can double my growing area and get much higher gain with twice as many plant for the same amount of power( 5000 lumens per sq/ft VS 10,000 lumens per sq/ft)
