So I started my first grow ever last week after debating and researching it for a long time! After getting some Dieselberry seeds and a DR60 grow kit (I don't have a great deal of room to work with) I got them underway.

I am using the following setup:
DR60 Growtent
250w HPS Lamp
100mm Vents TT inline extract fan/Ducting/Carbon Filter

The seedlings sprouted 5 days ago and seem to be pretty healthy looking! My only problem is my temperatures inside the tent can hit anywhere up to 35°C in the daytime even with all the windows open. At night it's not too bad, it's always between 25-30°C which from what I read is the optimal temperature.

I realize using an HPS lamp straight from the get go isn't ideal (for heat or vegetative growth) but I don't really want to spend too much more money unless I absolutely have to and I seem to see mixed opinions on whether it's a deal breaker in a passable setup or not.

So I'm left with a couple choices...

1. I buy a blue CFL lamp and use that for vegging then switch to the HPS just for flowering. The problem still remains, it is still going to overheat when I switch.
2. I buy a new, more powerful extractor fan (or a 100mm intake fan) and hope the increased air movement deals with the heat.
3. I buy a couple clip on fans and aim them at the reflector. An oscillating fan will not work as I do not have the space for it on the floor of the tent. :(

Basically I just wanted to know the opinions of people who no doubt have been in my position before or at least knows a lot more about it than I do.

How many degrees difference is a couple of 6 inch clip on fans going to make? Is an intake fan going to make a huge amount of difference?

Thanks in advance for any help you may or may not be able to provide me with! :)

Im sorry no got around to answering your question my friend my apologies +:slap: for your wait......let me know where you are with this and if you still need help there a live help thread link in my sig for faster help in cases like this and doing a Introductions also helps get eyes on your thread let me know how things are going enjoy the site!!!!

Hey bro is your HPS light an open wing reflector? Have you ever considered a vented hood or a cool tube for the HPS light instead? Vented hoods and cool tubes have ported openings made for ductwork, so you could size your existing duct you have for your carbon scrubber/extraction fan and find a hood/tube that has the same size duct. Then, instead of extracting the air from your fan/scrubber straight out of the tent, you add the hood/tube in-line after the fan, then exhaust the other end of that out of the tent.

So instead of: Carbon Scrubber -> Extraction Fan -> Duct leading out of tent

You would have: Carbon Scrubber -> Extraction Fan -> Duct leading to vented hood/tube -> Duct leaving vented hood/tube and leading outside of the tent.

Instead of all of the heat generated by your light being dispersed out into your grow tent, it would then be contained inside the hood/tube and piped right out of the tent. This is a very common setup in HPS/MH grow setups.

That's where I would start if I were in your shoes. :Sharing One:

Hey and welcome!
I have to agree with Son of Hobbes here. I think some type of "cool tube" fixture would be the best way to deal with this issue. Even if it seems a bit pricey, it would probably be the most cost effective too.
Peace and happy growing.

I was looking at cool tubes but due to the restricted space inside my tent (0.6m x 0.6m x 1.4m) I don't think I would have room. The reflector I have currently leaves about 2 inches either side and I don't think that would be enough for ducting.

i have had the same issues many times in the diff situations ive grown in but here just recently i had to move and downsized big time. i have a 2.5'x2.5'x6' tent and was running an air cooled hood as mentioned above and still having issues with heat!!!!

for under 200USD you can get a decent LED that would be perfect for your tent...once i made the change my temps sent from 85 inside the tent and 65-70 degrees F in room surrounding to now 75 in tent and 75 outside soo no heat to speak of at all, a more full spectrum for plant health=best investment IMO

Can your ballast for your HPS be turned down at all? For instance my ballast lets me use 50%, 75%, or 100% power. When I had heat issues, I turned my ballast to 50%. It dramatically reduced my heat and let me figure out something else.
If you can get a clip on fan for inside the tent; best case it helps with temp. Worst case it makes your plants stronger with the breeze. Not a bad idea to get one if possible.

I use this inline fan for one of my tents. I run a 600w HPS and this cools it down. I stopped by my hardware store and picked up a "router speed control" and used it to actually reduce the fan so it is more quiet. Even reduced it keeps my tent cool with my 600w light.

This is the router speed control I mentioned. I actually got mine at the hardware store for like $20.

I was looking at cool tubes but due to the restricted space inside my tent (0.6m x 0.6m x 1.4m) I don't think I would have room. The reflector I have currently leaves about 2 inches either side and I don't think that would be enough for ducting.

I think that's the crux of your problem. For that size tent you should use t5ho/cfl or LED. To use HPS/HID you should have twice the size tent(?).

You got what you got and I think it will work if you get the heat out quickly. I use clip-ons and they just move the air, no real cooling but great stems. When I used a smaller tent I had my extraction fan duct into my carbon filter outside my tent. If you have room mount the fan to the hood/light, vent outside to your filter, install a cheap bathroom exhaust fan vent to chimney.
