Lighting new GN Units

I'd buy one if I could justify the cost in my tiny tent but since I'm cheap (2 x £100 panels in my tent) I'm going to try one of these for £65 -
100w COB Relector Unit

If they aren't EU dispatched by September I'll order them from China. Now the original unit might work fine but I'm using it as a base(told you I'm cheap) and ordering a Cree Xlamp COB and driver like the ones used in this home made unit(Pic used with permission btw);

Looking forward to trying a sunlight vegging on a budget :)

Alright so this new GN will be suited for veg and flower correct? And at some wattage under 100.

My question is this will I be able to change the spectrum to suit my needs like the last modular series or will I be stuck buying colored diodes in my lights I have no real use for since I've acquired my Phillips D Papillon 315w?

im wanting to run 4 of these as focused secondary light to bring more red and uv ontop of my canopy while running my DPAP as well.

The price isn't all that bad minus the 20%VAT but that's to me, I just spent 1200 greenbacks for my DPap so it's apples to apples for me... If its too much for your "hobby" then change your hobby mate. Cuz for good gear with a good reputation backed by an industry leading 3 year warranty, you pay good money for these things. Fucks sake just go buy black stars or some other shitty led light for that matter but don't start hating on GN for trying to progress their tech..

pardon my French mods..

But all I will say is instead of wingeing over some speculative stuff none of us know anything about until GN releases the info on their site (except taNg's lucky ass) why don't we as a community get excited that this could be the future of something that will change horticultural lighting FOREVOR.

Exciting times...

I don't own a GN and I don't know if I ever will, but I see no need for hating on it. I think to do a proper cost/benefit analysis you'd have to compare the GN to a cheap Chinese unit over the long haul of many grows. Energy savings, replacements when panels burn out, yield, etc. Where has anyone been making the argument that a GN unit is more cost effective over a single grow? It's not unlike someone buying a Volcano vape instead of a no-name off eBay. Sure, they'll both get you baked & the cheapo may seem like a better move on day one, but after 5 years of daily use the Volcano will still be going while the cheap one will likely be in the trash long ago.

No, its not like buying a volcano, and if it were, The Exrteme Q is its equal at half the price, look at the reviews. And the plants don't care if their lights are in a fancy package. I wasn't hating on the GN's either, just stating what I saw as a fact. I can buy the same quality LEDs, current regulated drivers, and heatsinks and upgrade the light I already own, and still have only half the price of a GN unit invested. I'll pay more for quality, but I won't pay 4 times as much for half the power, or PAR or Lumens or whatever metric you'd prefer to use. are they better than the generic ones? To a certain degree yes but not 4 times better. Judging by their specs, one with an equivalent rating to my generic 300 watt would actually cost 6 times as much! At that price I can have a spare and still spend hundreds less. Give me a 300 watt until with a 5 year or better warranty, for say $500 U.S. and I'll buy it, anything more than that is price gouging. Why are fishing lures so pretty? To catch fishermen......And my Chevrolet pickup with 250,000 miles on it will still be going long after that BMW bit the dust!

wowzers...

Just retraced this thread. Quite a heated discussion. But as with all this stuff, one size most certainly doesn't fit all.
No doubt that GN deals with some of the upper end of the LED market, and if your like me then that is just great.
If its out of peoples price range and they prefer to invest in some cheaper alternatives then knock yourselves out.
Sure every one will be happy in the end.

I'm personally really exited to see what GN have been cooking up in their secret LAB all this time. If there previous results are anything to go by then then we likely have some fun times ahead. I have a feeling that when these lights are finally released there might be a few hats being cooked for dinner!!

Roll on August!

I just pulled 247g from a standard 0006 ! If the new light is smaller and we're therefore able to use it in more diverse ways ,has the same lumen output(measure of lights intensity ) as the 0006 less than half the wattage (remember wattage only refers to a units power consumption not overall performance) and a 3yr warranty made in the u.k it's a no brainier ,for me anyway. And that's before the Rebels spectrum and performance is accounted for!
