Lighting new GN Units

I just pulled 247g from a standard 0006 ! If the new light is smaller and we're therefore able to use it in more diverse ways ,has the same lumen output(measure of lights intensity ) as the 0006 less than half the wattage (remember wattage only refers to a units power consumption not overall performance) and a 3yr warranty made in the u.k it's a no brainier ,for me anyway. And that's before the Rebels spectrum and performance is accounted for!

the laws of physics will tell you that smaller is smaller, not equal to anything. a smaller unit means a smaller footprint, etc.
As an example, if the previous unit was 8"x16" and gave a 2ftx4ft coverage, and the new unit is smaller, then so will be the footprint. If it has even 10% more output, reflector angle will negate it being equal when trying to cover the same footprint.
Even with "better" LEDs, etc, performance will only increase a small percentage on a watt for watt basis. Here's are some other facts people don't seem to know. buy a 3 watt LED and drive it to its rated power. used continuously, it will burn out in a matter of days. Used intermittently, such as in a high power flashlight, then it will last a reasonable amount of time, IF it has a good enough heatsink. You see the other problem with driving them to near or at, max power, is HEAT! LED's driven to 90% capacity generate 300% more heat, for a 10% increase in light output. This is why you won't find LED grow light that run at the rated capacity of the LED. Giving up 10% of PAR or Lumens, to gain years of reliability.

On the other hand, if they have improved their light by any means, thats still a good thing. If you own one or plan to buy one, I'm sure you'll be happy with it. I just have a different viewpoint on spending that much money on a grow light of that output level.

All I know is the rebels I've been getting killer results are driven at 1w and the new lights will be double that, GN are being vague they are just saying less than 3w also my upgraded MS0004 is smaller than my standard MS0006 and it's more powerful. I'm not quite sure how there spreading the light but they did say its different to what anyone else is doing and one of the key features to the light.

pop22, surely a 5w running at 3w through a 120deg lens will cover more space at the same par/lumens as a 3w running at 2w through a 90deg lens? I know it's not that simple but as a theory to work on more cover in a smaller space should at least be feasible?

GN have said the light has a smaller case ,no fans ,similar lumens and coverage ,on less wattage !:)

I've been pondering pops theory of smaller is smaller and I think with technology most things get smaller and more powerful, just coincided the personal computer...I imagine my iPhone has more processing power than the first home computers.

Combine harvester, planes, and yeilds from auto's, all things that get bigger and better. :pighug:

No, its not like buying a volcano, and if it were, The Exrteme Q is its equal at half the price, look at the reviews. And the plants don't care if their lights are in a fancy package. I wasn't hating on the GN's either, just stating what I saw as a fact. I can buy the same quality LEDs, current regulated drivers, and heatsinks and upgrade the light I already own, and still have only half the price of a GN unit invested. I'll pay more for quality, but I won't pay 4 times as much for half the power, or PAR or Lumens or whatever metric you'd prefer to use. are they better than the generic ones? To a certain degree yes but not 4 times better. Judging by their specs, one with an equivalent rating to my generic 300 watt would actually cost 6 times as much! At that price I can have a spare and still spend hundreds less. Give me a 300 watt until with a 5 year or better warranty, for say $500 U.S. and I'll buy it, anything more than that is price gouging. Why are fishing lures so pretty? To catch fishermen......And my Chevrolet pickup with 250,000 miles on it will still be going long after that BMW bit the dust!

Hey Pops, not really following the drama of the thread, but saw this response pop up under my new posts listing and just had to pipe in owning both the extreme q and the Volcano. NO THEY ARE NOT ANYTHING NEAR EACH OTHER IN QUALITY. Yea they will both get you high, but hands down my volcano has withstood the test of time (7+years) I've left it on over. 24hrs several times by accident.... The thing works brand new as the day I got it! And no the extreme q bag filled is no where near the tasty thick goodness I get off my volcano... I own an extreme q, silver surfer, volcano, and the mflb... The only one IMHO that can rival as far as quality and making the most of your buds is the mflb (ONLY PAIRED with the power adapter otherwise IMHO it's shit)

So yea sometimes you save a few bucks and get as much if not more for your buck, but there is sometimes something to be said for those "over priced" top of the line (or they want you to believe) goods.... Most of the time you get what you paid for... Being in the USA and having to have either a grow northern or a bysen I went with the bysen as they both had to be shipped over seas and I was saving a whopping 80-90 dollars... Long story short, my bysen granted was covered under warranty but took some upwards of three weeks to get part and pain staking amounts of time trying to talk with the people at bysen as there was a slight language barrier, had one burned out led panel, one burned out driver and one broken fan all three occasions seperate.., so needless to say have had a lot of down time with my bysen that I would've looking in hind sight rather have spent the extra $$ upfront and not saying the GN wouldn't have broken but I doubt I would've went through so much Hasell. Just my :2cents: on price vs perceived quality... Volcano's rule! Just saying

same can be said for grinders.over 20 odd years ive bought loads of em £2-£30.a few plastic few metal.2/3/4 part 30mm-65mm.plastic will last a weekend, metal should last years.they all grind weed.
I got the large (88mm) 4 part space case a few months ago £70 I guess it grinds weed just like a £10 grinder,or maybe better ?
I don't know, don't want to get it dirty its too nice to look at.besides I have a drawer full of grinders.

Well said! And I don't disagree that sometimes, or somethings that seem over priced are actually superior products. If I could buy any automobile made. I'd own a Rolls Royce. Why? Superior craftsmanship. Nothing is the equal. If you scratch the wood trim in your Rolls, they have 5 6ft logs with a serial number on them to match your car, and they CARVE you a new one! The engine needs work so rarely, the engine compartment is sealed. But your not going to convince me paying $480 for $50 worth of electronics and sheet metal is a good deal. Yes there's still a lot wrong with this whole industry, its still in its infancy. And I said and will say again, for this kind of product, yes I would be willing to spend more if that meant getting a proven to more reliable product with a better warranty. But I'm not going to pay $480 a light who's output is 2 years behind the times when it should be leading the pack. At least that's my opinion.

I can't buy the parts to make a Volcano, they make them all themselves and they make a top notch product. GN buys there parts from the same manufacturers that the Chinese do ( All non experimental-scientific LEDs are made in China! ) for about 25% of what I'd pay for those same parts ( by buying quantity ) that I'd pay for them. But the fact remains, they are using commodity LEDs and driver/power supplies.

Really though, until there are more lights using first bin LEDs, etc, there's little to compare them to. And sometimes I hate the fact that all my purchasing decisions are price to benefit driven, I'd love to just say " Screw it I want that one! " But that's a reality for many of us. So to spend that much for 2 lights is not feasible in any sense. If I had to save that much I'd be waiting a year or two. I don't fault anyone for buying one, value is sometimes a personal thing. Its is a real wakeup call though when your income is reduced by 75%, it brings new meaning to budgeting lol!

Peace! :Sharing One:
