On my last grow I used pipe cleaners and safety pins to keep leaves pulled out of the way of bud sites. I had safety pins the whole way around my smart pot. In the end I just plucked with no ill effect. It was a lot less hassle. If you do pluck just keep it minimal. Don't do it all at the same time. Just a couple leaves every few days and see how she responds.
I think if you give adequate light to lower branches ,and open them up a little with LST,you should not have to defoliate ,if you think of your fan leaves as solar panels for the plants energy ,you prolly don,t wan,t to remove them.I think if they are damaged ,and are in late flowering,i take off damaged leaves.This is my humble opinion.Peace.
