It's probably temperature. You could make a mini greenhouse out of clear plastic to raise temperatures. I put big stones in my greenhouse (2 men just to lift them). These heat up during the day and radiate it off at night. Seedlings that sit on them don't suffer frost damage. It allows one to start veg crops earlier and thus extend the growing season.

Built a small green house now with a big clear bag. The rocks sound good will give it a try
